First, I want to point out that I live in a part of Romania where we have about 50% hungarian population, I was raised with hungarians and their food, so I can say I know what a good gulas is. I saw many reviews with words like “amazing” and “delicious”. I don’t know what kind of food do other people eat at home or other places, but this was far from “an amazing culinary experience”.
First, the price does not match the size. For the amount we payed I think we got quite a small portion. Don’t get me wrong, the portions are medium-big, but the prices are huge.
Second, the staff was quite rude, the guy was being a smart-arse telling us stuff like “you know, soup is a liquid”. I am truly convinced that in my years of living I have learned that before, mate.
And in the end, you should know that you have to pay about 16% of your order for “service”. Not a problem with this. The problem was that when we had to pay, the waiter told us to go down and pay at the register. So what am I paying in the “service” fee? The fact that I recived cutlery, a plate of food and some smart remarks about my knowledge? Don’t get me wrong. I tip when I see the waiter trying his best with my order, but this was not the case and is basically a forced tip.
Btw, the food is mid, nothing spectacular. Just dont fall for this turist trap. Have a...
Read moreAt the end of March 2025 I visited this restaurant for the second time. (First in December 2024) I would say It's my favourite, so far, in Budapest. The atmosphere inside is like a Hungarian/Romanian countriside house. Like my grandma's house. They even sell some products. We bought the famous Erös Pista when we paid the bill. The waiter takes your order. (And both I had were super nice, super friendly, super helpful and with great English.) But, you pay downstairs, at the counter. The accept cash and card. The food tastes exactly like what my grandma used to cook. This is the closest to home made that I found in my travels. The menu is not varied but, the quality of the few options is top class. The menu is in many languages. I loved the Hungarian Pork Stew with Dumplings (my grandma called the dumplings galuska) and the jam pancakes and the cottage cheese with chocolate pancakes. The meat and vegetables soup tasted exactly like in the village. Given the location (just next to Szécsényi bridge), the prices are great!!! It's, actually, one of the cheapest places I ate in, in central Budapest. And probably the best food I had in...
Read moreThe food served in this restaurant is tasty and worth trying Prices in the menu are cheap for tourists (estimate max. HUF 2500) Choices for small or large portions The waiter and staff are very friendly and entertaining The prices in the menu and in the receipt were marked up upto 2x stated in the menu. The waiter kept getting the orders wrong and had to send the food back in multiple occasions
Everything was going well until we had to pay for the food. The waiter had problems with handling the cashier POS machine and input wrong orders and inconsistent prices in the receipt (some items weren't the same prices stated in the menu and some small portion items were displayed as the large portion price.)
Will I go back there again? No.
There are many other Hungarian/local restaurants that are good value and delicious throughout Budapest.
Do I suggest you go here? Maybe yes, but do keep in mind you should take a photo of the menu and write down what you and your friends/family ordered to make sure you arent being cheated/tricked by their great...
