First off the food is fantastic and there’s plenty of it. Didn’t get 5 star because the place is run more like a cafeteria than a restaurant. People were friendly enough (for Iceland anyway) but little things were lacking. Food came quick, which was great as we were starving. Ordered a bottle of wine, which came in an ice bucket and probably would have stayed there if we hadn’t opened it and served our selves. OK, no great hardship, having to open and pour your own wine, not expected in a restaurant though. Starters arrived and mains came pretty soon after, in fact before we’d finished the first course. Nice to have a gap between courses, but hey ho. We finished our food pretty sharpish and my dirty plates were left on the table for the remainder of our time in here. From the point that our main courses arrived no one came back to the table. No call back by, no wine top ups, no plate clearing. Deserts? Not sure if they sell them as we certainly weren’t asked. Coffee? Great idea, but see above. After noticing someone else pay the bill at the bar, we got up, put our coats on, paid and left. Maybe this service is normal for Akureyri? Would we go back? The answer is Yes, because the food is worth it, but now we know not to expect much from the service. Maybe the buffet lunch they do would be a better option, where you...
Read moreThis right here is just about as authentic as Thai food gets in this remote part of the world. I know because I stay close by to Thailand and am surrounded with Thai bistros back home.
Tom Yum Goong is on the milder spice level, but wow the lemongrass and herbs really made me feel better about all the ISK 1.5k cold sandwiches I have had. (Was even served Campbell Mushroom Soup at one point and had ISK 2.5K vegetable soup that tasted strangely similar to mee soto soup, iykyk.) Pad Thai is slight reminiscent of Thipsamai in Bangkok, ketchup-y and on the sweeter side, still well balanced. It’s served with a small side of beasprouts (daogey in Iceland?! I eat!!). Green curry was alright, devoured it anyway. loved that there’s long beans in it, not spicy to me at all. Thai Iced Milk Tea. Why is this not in the menu?! It’s found by the bar counter. It’s thicker than what I am used to, probably because of the milk used but wow, completed the meal.
Ignore the naysayers. Highly recommended. Our emptied dishes...
Read moreOn the ninth day of our adventure in Iceland, we found ourselves yearning for the savory flavors of Asian cuisine, specifically Thai food. We satisfied our cravings at Krua Siam, where we devoured every bite of our delicious meals. Our orders consisted of chicken fried rice, chicken egg noodles, and chicken red curry (we just can't get enough of chicken). The chicken fried rice was out of this world, and the red curry was an explosion of flavors, with notes of chili and bell pepper, but the egg noodles were a bit too sweet for our liking. Luckily, they provided a spice box filled with chili oil, chili powder, soy sauce, and jalapeños, which enhanced the flavors of the egg noodles, leaving us feeling content and grateful for...
