I have no idea what people are on about when they review this place. I had a poor experience here - poor service and average to below average food.
The service was extremely slow - it took something like 40 mins for them to get our food after it had been ordered. Only one dry curry dish arrived earlier and we were all done with it and sitting there with dry hands for another 20 mins waiting for food. And all that after reminding 1 service guy and 2 separate supervisor staffs about it.
And yeah, the chap (in blacks) looked surprised that I didn't care for bottled water when he asked me about water. Look man, I dont know how it works in your place, but if I cant trust to drink your water I'm not sure I'd trust your food either (no, I didn't say that to him, I just responded "regular" with a smile when he asked "Sir, bottled water?"). And if its about money and need the meagre profit from a bottle of water to keep the restaurant a going concern maybe some better management is in order (which may very well be the case going by what I experienced).
The food tasted fairly ordinary as a whole - it certainly wasn't bad by any means, but at these elevated prices of nearly 1k per head I expect better - much much better. And its not the cuisine - I love fish and I love Mangalorean food. There are far better options for both in this city.
The squid dry curry was pretty good, but that was about the only dish from that night that was actually any good and not just average or below-par. The fish curry whose name I cant recall was average although they do serve a lot of gravy - which is good. The curry that comes with Kori rotti was below average for taste (although there is plenty of it). The appams were cold when they reached the table (no surprise - it was probably sitting somewhere for atleast half an hour) though the curries were certainly hot. The tender coconut payasam apparently tasted more of condensed milk than coconut - tender or otherwise. While I cant verify that claim since I didn't have it personally, I'd trust their judgement on this matter. I forget what drinks I ordered, but that's perhaps not too bad since I dont recall anything very nice.
Dont get me wrong, the food isn't bad per-se, but its so eminently forgettable in general that even if exclude everything about their service I still cant see the point - not even if it were priced at a significant discount to their current prices. While I dont mind high prices, there was nothing here to justify it except the lights and ambience. The food simply isn't particularly tasty.
Oh, and they have service charges - I mean, sure, thats not surprising. But I'd have argued to have that revoked on some other day given the sad state of their "service" that we received that night but didn't want to spoil this one for ourselves so I let it be. While the service was terribly slow, I have to note that the supervisors (in blue-grey) were polite and responsive all throughout - and actually seemed to care, so I have to give them that. Even the chap in black that seems to judge you by your taste in water seemed to be amicable in other matters.
At the end, even the billing took what seemed like inordinately long... The table on my left also seemed to take long to have their orders served - I specifically heard him ask about some chicken dish twice, and another table a little behind me was sitting there when I entered and they were still there as I left.
When we exited, we saw quite a congregation of people waiting outside, waiting for their turn to enter. I thought that was most fitting, people being primed up for the experience that they are about to have - a long wait for mediocrity. If you have time to kill I suppose there is no better place to be - just dont be hungry. I have no idea what goes on in this place for them to be that slow with service and with such average food and still be rated this high.
Maybe I'm missing the point - maybe its called a "lunch home" because that's when I needed to place an order so that I can have a...
Read moreMahesh lunch home is a beacon for great seafood in Mumbai.
It was started at Mumbai in the late 1970’s and has introduced Mangalore Hi cuisine to Mumbai.
And then on Mumbai has opened its arms and welcomed Mahesh Lunch home with arms wide open.
Old Classic Mumbai based outlet offering some mangalore delicacies in Namma Bengaluru
Ambiance – simple decor
A appreciable décor, dim lighting and seating options are pretty comfortable.
At the entrance one can witness the display of seafood with an array of Lobsters, pomfret, tiger prawns and other delicacies.
It’s a perfect place for casual dine in with a group of friends or family
Food – descent experience
What a fabulous night it was amidst company of good friends - conversations and loads of fun.
What I liked the most
Kane rawa fry (lady fish fry tossed along with semolina)
Neer dosa
Chicken korma (suggested by staff) was a pleasant surprise goes well with steamed rice or appam
Butter garlic 🍤 prawns are pretty good. Had a slight over dose of garlic but yes if it can be reduced a bit it would be a classic.
Elneer payasam (Tender coconut payasam) Is simple yet delicious made with a fine balance of coconut milk , some tender coconut slices with a fine balance of sweetness quo which is a popular dessert from Kerala.
What needs to improvised –
Seafood soup – The consistency of soup is good especially the taste, but it fell flat as the fish used it is not fresh and is a bit stale.
Salmon fish tikka – The fish tikka is descent with the flavor’s, but the salmon fish is not fresh again(salmon fish is being refrigerated for a long time) and used, this lead to lack of right melt in mouth tikka taste.
Paneer Ghee roast and Chicken Ghee roast – I was counting on these two but these lacked the right flavor , reason they tad tangy flavour and the rich masala used to dish out the ghee roast is just right, but lacked the flavor of ghee. Was not really to my liking.
Service – can be improvised
The staff here are pretty decent (the ones who served us) , but I would urge the management to make sure they work upon by giving them a proper training in terms of the food served, they need to be thoroughly aware of the menu being offered and if patrons have any requests for them.
Again a major setback here the person who managed or took our orders initially was out right blunt lacked customer retention skills or what are so called basics of customer service is.
They need to seriously work on this and make sure it is addressed right away.
But when we spoke to the manager of the place he made sure this is addressed and he personally took care of our table. And then on things were in place.
Would appreciate the positive response from the manager here.
Appeal to team Mahesh Lunch home – Guys if the petty issues with food as mentioned above and a bit of training for the staff are handled the place deserves a huge round of applause.
I have personally visited Mahesh lunch home in Mumbai it is a fabulous place and the main reason the fish is fresh catch and all the sea food dishes are flawless and delicious, service is quick and humble in the Mumbai outlet. So one would expect the same in Bangalore.
We had conveyed the same to manager and he has assured that this will be taken care of
VFM – fairly good
The place scores decently in terms of food, the mocktails are pretty good, the prices are pretty descent.
A meal for two would cost up to 1500 with a mocktail.
Will come back sure for my love of seafood and my encounter with a special experience I had in Mumbai, I’m sure you folks can correct things and do a...
Read moreIt has been over a year now, and time to visit the legendary Seafood Chain from Mumbai (now I heard they are in Dubai too) serving authentic cuisine from the Konkan Coast. My recent visit to Mahesh Lunch Home did help me sample some of their non Konkan dishes from their menu with a few recommendations from the friendly manager.
We started off with a Chicken Manchow Soup which was absolutely delicious, went beautifully with the crispy fried veg our table had ordered.
The Salmon Tikka arrived was very well made, but unfortunately the fish was stale that I could not take it.
The Kokam Kadi was delicious, fresh and very refreshing, though it had a tad bit of more sourness that it usually needs.
The Butter Garlic Prawns were fabulous, that overload of garlic drenched in butter absolutely ticked all the boxes for me.
For mains we had a variety mix ordered for our table and shared, the Chicken Korma, recommended by the restaurant was absolutely fabulous, be it with Neer Dosa, Aapam, Or Rice, this one comes highly recommended.
The Chicken Ghee Roast was good, and could use a little bit of more ghee flavour to make it more authentic.
Desserts were Yumm, especially the caramel custard and tender coconut payasam.
Service is something that need to improve tremendously, no I am not taking about the service staff, they were extremely polite, attentive and very courteous, the person who took our order had an air of arrogance that was a little too unbearable, gladly the manager had to intervene and help our table throughout the evening.
This place still holds its legendary charm and the delicious if not authentic food they serve, if only they could UP the freshness quotient of the fish, they can continue to be the legends that they always were and always are. If not for these two glitches, this place is an absolute 5 stars worth legend. April 2018 Review
Always wanted to visit this place & I did to sample their lunch Thalis. Not being a big fan of seafood then, I still opted for the fish Thali, as that is what is highly recommended here.
What I loved was the Crab gravy, which was yumm, one of the best I had. Though not a big fan of Konkani flavours (primarily because of the use of dry coconut), surprisingly I did like the meal overall, a must have for any...
