A Legacy Tarnished: A Disastrous Experience at The Only Place, Bangalore

Date of Visit: December 29, 2024

Once a cornerstone of Bangalore's dining scene, The Only Place has sadly fallen from grace. Our visit today was an appalling experience, and I can confidently say I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant to anyone.

We ordered a selection of dishes, including their once-famous beef steak. Accompanying it was a side of vegetables that were not just unappetizing but outright rotten. The foul odor and taste made them completely inedible, raising serious questions about the restaurant's quality control.

When we brought this to the attention of a manager, her response was shockingly indifferent. After saying she would "look into it," she disappeared without any follow-up. When we finally managed to call her back, she casually explained that the vegetables were pre-boiled and stored, as if that justified serving spoiled food. An apology was only begrudgingly offered after persistent prompting.

Adding insult to injury, a senior manager arrived, not to resolve the issue, but to deliver an arrogant lecture about the restaurant's 60-year legacy. Instead of addressing our valid concerns, he chose to focus on how insulted he felt by our feedback. For the record, sir, the issue isn’t your legacy — it’s the spoiled food and the dismissive attitude of your staff. He even went so far as to boast about showing us the morning's vegetable purchase bill, as if that excused the abysmal quality.

Legacy does not excuse poor food quality, nor does it absolve the restaurant of treating customers with disrespect. The dismissive attitude of the junior manager and the ego-driven arrogance of the senior manager made it clear that customer satisfaction is no longer a priority here.

It’s time for The Only Place to stop resting on its past reputation and address the glaring decline in its standards. If they fail to do so, their once-celebrated name will become nothing more than a cautionary tale.

For those considering dining here: spare yourself the disappointment. Bangalore offers plenty of fantastic alternatives where quality food and customer respect still matter.

This wasn’t just a bad meal — it was a deeply frustrating experience that left us feeling disrespected and unheard.

Avoid The Only Place. It’s no longer worth your...

I visited this OG steakhouse after having it on my 'want to visit' list for quite a while. I am pleased and happy with the dining experience and the food which they had to offer here as such a kind of an American cuisine provision is seldom in this country. I ordered 5 dishes here and I recommend to be here as early as possible when the restaurant opens as occupants fill up seats quickly or maybe because I visited on a Sunday. However, I was one of the first customers for them to host and they did well. The servers were quick, gentle and patient. I ordered the mini lamb chops, Greek salad, chateaubrian supreme steak, philly cheese steak, Sirloin tips and they offered me 2 slices of complimentary garlic bread. The quantity was suffice and the place will be a relief to those who envy American steaks and their flavour. It might not meet those standards but just does serve some justice and flavour. Special compliments to their house-made mustard sauce. That was a banger. The lamb chops and Sirloin tips (this was on the salty and peppery side) were good. Their Greek salad was phenomenal. Super decadent and will be a non negotiable order if I happen to dine in again. I had my Chateaubrian supreme steak cooked to somewhere in between medium and well done and it was satisfying and satiating. However, my absolutely favourite dish which caught me off guard was their philly cheese steak (basically served as a sandwich with a 7"-8" bread). I substituted the french fries with veggies as my health senses started holding my back. Nonetheless, it was filled with juicy pulled steak, with tomatoes, mushrooms, a bit of sauce and a generous amount of cheese. Definitely a 9/10. This rating may change if I ever get to have the authentic philly cheese steak sandwich in the US :) My total bill summed up to 3,612 rs without any service charges. It is slightly on the expensive side, but considering the quantity, service, location and legacy, it is justifiable. Having said that, if they escalate the prices beyond their current price, then I might reconsider dining here. I definitely had a good time and thank you OP crew...

The Only Place is my go to place for steaks and large family dinners. The ambience is classic with simple decoration in their table cloth and chairs. They are known for their steaks, burgers, and some baked/pasta items. Located in a very busy area which attracts footfall so going late after 9:30 is risky, in my case they had run out of burgers, drinks, and some desserts too. Entrance has a board of today’s special, usually 5-6 items. I really recommend the soups, cream ones are a bang on specially the celery. Greek and Mediterranean salads are with cheese worth trying for a change. Stroganoffs are not big in quantity but heavy on the stomach with a large amount of butter used. Burgers are available in a variety of meats but my personal favorites are juicy lucy and sloppy joe. Steaks menu is vast, however, the marination sauce is limited in most of them. You get a portion of complimentary garlic bread depending on the number of items you order (its awesome yumm) Starters such as prawns were bit expensive but the marination was perfect (bread crumb/bbq), chicken wings were full and mildly spiced. Chicken sombrero steak has 4-5 strips with lots of onions/capsicum. The mix is a bit sweet and tastes average. Beef steaks are usually thick and if ordered well done it might be hard to chew, so order accordingly. Fish steak (OP special) is simply wow, very tender meat with a perfect blend of spices. Puddings and pies are quite small in quantity and can be shared by two. Advice: Go early on weekends otherwise many items would be over. Here are some extra points to consider · Valet parking is available · Washroom is not at its best and the handwash kept in the open · Service is quick despite a packed hall and a courteous staff

I would say one of the best places to try steak though it took us 2 hrs to reach there... Bengaluru traffic 😅. As per the photos we had the following: Steak Au Poivre : The meat was really tender and delicious. It was very juicy to fill our mouths with every bite we took. The sauce was extraordinary. We loved it. Well it was medium rare cooked. Boston Special: Again medium rare cooked. There wasn't much of the sauce but to be honest it wasn't required. The meat was tender, juicy and every bite was delicious. It was just like how we watch the food made by top chefs in TV shows (though haven't tasted them yet). But it was really worth the food. Moussakka - Well it was kind of a pie with minced chicken inside and it was coated with puff and aubergine (baingan) and cheese on top. It tasted really good something different that we had but the quantity was too much for us to finish it. Though we enjoyed eating it but we got tired in the end 😅. But again a must try dish. Apple pie - Well it is served with or without cream and you also have an option for ice cream (vanilla suggested). The cream won't be the whipped cream, it will be liquid. But for Apple pie, you will enjoy it the most without ice cream and cream. The cinnamon flavour especially gives a good taste with the apple and pastry. It is the perfect dessert to finish a beautiful meal. Service : Their service was good and quick. Though sometimes it was hard to find someone. But rest it was really good. The ambience was good but a little kind of dull. You can go with your friends and colleagues to have a meal and gossip. Important notice - They don't serve Alcohol. Last but not the least, this place is worth visiting not once but many times...
