I recently visited Chung Wah Chinese Restaurant, and unfortunately, my experience left much to be desired. As someone who appreciates good Chinese cuisine, I was disappointed with the overall standard of the restaurant. The food quality, particularly the chicken pieces and the special noodles, fell below my expectations, leading me to rate this establishment as below average. One of the main issues I encountered was the chicken dish I ordered. The chicken pieces were chewy and excessively hard, which made it difficult to enjoy the dish. It was evident that the chicken had been overcooked, resulting in a dry and unpleasant texture. This lack of tenderness significantly affected my dining experience and left me dissatisfied. Moreover, the special noodles, which I had heard positive reviews about, were a major letdown. The noodles were excessively oily, lacking the desired balance of flavors. The overwhelming oil content not only affected the taste but also left an unpleasant aftertaste. It was disheartening to see such a staple dish being prepared without the necessary attention to detail, resulting in an unappetizing and greasy meal. In addition to the food quality concerns, the overall dining experience at Chung Wah Chinese Restaurant left much to be desired. The ambiance was average at best, lacking the warmth and inviting atmosphere that one expects from a Chinese eatery. The service was also subpar, with slow response times and inattentive staff. It seemed as though the restaurant was understaffed, leading to delays in taking orders and receiving the food. While it is important to note that taste preferences can vary, my experience at Chung Wah Chinese Restaurant was far from satisfactory. The chewy and hard chicken pieces, along with the excessively oily special noodles, indicate a lack of attention to detail in the kitchen. These issues significantly impacted the overall quality of the food and left me disappointed. As a customer, I value consistency, taste, and service quality, all of which were lacking during my visit to Chung Wah Chinese Restaurant. It is my hope that the management takes these criticisms constructively and works towards improving the culinary experience offered to its patrons. In conclusion, based on my experience, I would rate Chung Wah Chinese Restaurant as below average. I would recommend potential diners to explore other options in search of a more satisfying and enjoyable Chinese dining experience. This review is solely based on my personal experience and opinion, and it may not reflect the views of others who have dined at Chung Wah Chinese Restaurant.

What can I say? Chung Wah (in Kolkata pronounced as chung-u-ah mostly) is all about adolescent nostalgia. For many this is the place where they got the first taste of adulthood (whatever that may mean). If you are in Kolkata and looking for a watering hole in the heart of the city then you should not miss Chung Wah (just beside Chandni Chowk metro station). Well, coming to the food and drinks at Chung Wah let me say it is quite decent. At least the basic Chinese and fried items are good enough. The quantity is huge. The ingredients are fresh and the preparations are tasty. My favourite at Chung Wah is of course their iconic Dry Roast Chilli Pork. It's heaven actually. Just make sure you give them 2 instructions - use less quantity of green chilies and don't go overboard with pork fat. From the price perspective it's value for money. Budget for two will be about 700 to 800 at the most (without alcohol). Comparatively beverages cost is a bit steeper now. Beer costs about INR 250/- a bottle and standard IMFL costs about INR 200 - 300 per 60 ml depending on the brand. But hardly one goes to Chung Wah only for food and drinks. Most of us go there just to look back, relax and talk to ourselves. The vintage decor with open tables in a single row right in the middle (where you share your table with complete strangers, to hell with privacy and personal space) and fully covered cabins on both sides (the place to become a bit naughty may be - no one bothers to disturb) is something that you would hardly come across in any other watering hole. Most of the waiters are in their early or mid 50s and have been working there for at least a couple of decades if not more. Most of the patrons are regulars - they have their fixed tables (or cabins), know the waiters by their first names and keep ordering the same drink and the food every time they visit. Honestly, Chung Wah is not for the light hearted. It doesn't stand for finesse. It is not for the typical middle class or upper middle class Bengali family. It is not also for the Gen-Z used to high end Pubs & Bars. People coming here for the first time may find it a bit shabby, unhygienic and dim (which is partly true). But over the years it becomes a habit. As you pass by the Chandni Chowk metro station you suddenly stop by the bright red façade of the restaurant and feel an urge to push the doors to enter a place that almost belongs to you. May be, Chung Wah is the "Hotel California of Calcultta" - it's a lovely place, it's a lovely place!!!

Chung Wah, situated in Kolkata's historic Chandi Chowk area, was a legendary bar with a history that stretched over a century. Known for its vibrant atmosphere, it became a popular gathering spot for the city's socialites, intellectuals, and working-class locals alike. The bar gained a reputation as a place where people from various walks of life could come together to unwind, engage in lively conversation, and enjoy a drink. Its eclectic mix of patrons added to its charm, blending the old and new worlds of Kolkata in a way that was uniquely its own. One of the distinctive features of Chung Wah was its private cabins, each named after celebrated Bengali literary works, such as *Sesher Kobita*, *Bonolata Sen*, *Bhalobasha*, and *Nesha*. These names added a touch of Bengali culture and sophistication, making each space feel personal and rich in literary history. However, despite these artistic nods, the overall vibe of the place was far from refined. The bar exuded a noisy, somewhat chaotic energy, with a shabby decor that matched its unpolished atmosphere. The service was often described as rough, with staff who didn't always pay attention to the finer details, and the food left much to be desired, often falling short of expectations. For those seeking a quiet, upscale experience, Chung Wah was not the ideal destination. However, for those in search of a place to enjoy drinks with friends, especially when the goal was more about the social experience than fine dining or peaceful surroundings, it offered a certain gritty charm. It was never a place meant for family outings or anyone looking for a quiet, sophisticated night. If you were simply after booze, noise, and the hustle of Kolkata’s more raw side, Chung Wah was the place to be. Despite its rough edges, it became an iconic part of the city’s nightlife and cultural history.

KOLKATA'S THE 'BEST' AND 'CHEAPEST' BAR CUM RESTAURANT

Yes, you heard it all right. This is THE BEST and CHEAPEST restaurant cum bar in Kolkata. Let's find out how they treat and behave with their customers.

We went on 11th February 2023 at around 6.30 pm in evening. Located on main road of CR Avenue. Just opposite to E-Mall. Walking distance of a minute from Chandi Chowk metro station Gate 1. This is one of the oldest bar cum restaurant in Kolkata who serves authentic Chilly Pork which we came to know from a Vlog from Instagram.

They have unique cabin like seating arrangement with usual seating area. They provided Cabin 9 (which we didn't ask for). Later, we came to know that this place neither women friendly nor kid friendly. The crowd is very different altogether with very bad ambience and environment. This place is hygienic at all with smelly and stinky environment. Gents washroom is dirty and unhygienic. They have open PAY and USE like toilet. In front of that washroom only they are serving complimentary (chanachur). Kitchen seemed very dirty too. Even the chairs and glasses that they poured on wasn't cleaned or washed properly. Failed to find a CCTV too. This isn't a family restaurant. If you wanna taste their dishes it's better if you just order and take out. Don't even go inside to get their HELL LIKE EXPERIENCE.

We had given Cabin 9 where a somewhat middle-aged UNCLE, clean shaved mustached with glasses was serving us. When my girlfriend went to use the washroom he approached me and said that the cabin costs 800/hour and we have to order for at least 800 to sit for an hour. Moreover, me being their regular customer doesn't follow this particular rule. I come with different girls and don't order much. Don't know from where he got this wherein it was my first visit. But was my last VISIT for sure too..

When my girlfriend tried to speak with him he somehow started arguing behaved very rudely. When we wanted to speak with the Manager or the Owner he denied completely.

We didn't elongate the conversation and left paying the bill of 833 for seating for an hour. As I mentioned earlier they don't have CCTVs, so it was very clear that let their "customers" to use those Cabins for a different reason.

We didn't feel safe inside the restaurant cause we didn't had any proof of that mistreatment and ill-behavior.

When the unruly so called Waiter approached again and asked for a tip we denied. Then he threatened us that he won't let us seat in the Cabin again.

As if we are dying to visit again.

DRINKS ARE HIGHLY OVERPRICED

We tried their CHILLY PORK. Wasn't authentic in taste, portion wasn't good either. So THUMBS DOWN IN QUALITY AND QUANTITY TOO.

Wish I could give a negative star to them.

So guys, do visit this place if you wanna enjoy HELL with THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE, UNHYGIENIC AND CHEAPEST BAR OF...
