Kusum Rolls – 5/5
Date of Visit: November 29, 2024
Overview
Kusum Rolls, located in the vibrant Park Street area of Kolkata, is a legendary street food joint known for serving some of the most flavorful and satisfying Kathi rolls. I visited this iconic spot to try their famed egg rolls, and I must say, it turned out to be one of the most memorable food experiences I’ve ever had.
Ambience and Atmosphere
Being a street food stall, Kusum Rolls offers a no-frills, bustling vibe typical of Kolkata’s street food culture. The aroma of freshly prepared rolls wafts through the air, adding to the anticipation. It’s a quick-service spot perfect for a grab-and-go meal or a casual bite.
Service
The service was efficient and friendly, with the staff skillfully preparing rolls in front of you. Despite the crowd, they maintained a smooth flow, ensuring minimal waiting time.
Food and Beverages
• Egg Roll: Hands down, the best thing I’ve ever tasted. The roll struck a perfect balance—not too sweet, not too spicy, with just enough tanginess. The egg was soft and fluffy, while the crispy fresh onions added a delightful crunch. The paratha was flaky yet slightly chewy, holding all the ingredients together beautifully. Every bite was an explosion of flavors. • Chicken Kathi Roll: Another highlight. The chicken was tender, well-marinated, and perfectly spiced, making it a satisfying option for meat lovers.
Pricing
Kusum Rolls is incredibly affordable, offering high-quality food at pocket-friendly prices. The portion size is generous, ensuring great value for money.
Unique Points
The harmony of flavors in Kusum’s rolls is unmatched. The use of fresh, high-quality ingredients and the perfect layering of textures make these rolls stand out among countless others in Kolkata.
Recommendations and Tips
• Must-try: The Egg Roll is an absolute must—it’s street food perfection. • Tip: Visit during non-peak hours to avoid the long queues, as this spot is always buzzing with activity.
Final Verdict
Kusum Rolls is a street food haven and a true representation of Kolkata’s culinary heritage. The Egg Roll is a masterpiece that will leave you craving for more. If you’re in the area, missing out on this gem would be a regret. Highly...
Read moreThis might seem like a shocker to most, especially those who fondly remember the place as an icon of delicious mouthwatering kathi rolls, but that's in the past. This place has lost its charm, and its quality.
Nowadays, it's a cash hungry establishment, churning while cashing in the fame of past. People who come here just because it's a name heard from YouTubers and Bloggers, are the primary clientale.
Let me describe the sad state of the food that's being served.
The quality of the paratha has degraded; as their focus has shifted towards quantity irrespective of quality - it's an understandable outcome. The chicken and mutton are stale. As a shop who make such immense sales on a daily basis, to provide stale meat is unthinkable, but reality still surprises. The sauces are borderline spoilt. The sauces taste like fermented rat poison with a hint of spice. All my companions who came along with me, a total of 9 people, this was a unanimous verdict. The sauce is the worst of them all.
The non-foody aspect like packaging and handling of customers are just sloppy and rude respectively.
Such a letdown.
This place has become a den of disappointment. Please don't follow the hype and come to satiate your craving for some yummy Kathi rolls. You'll want to throw up from the...
Read moreKolkatta is famous for it's Kathi Rolls and this dish/item is believed to have originated here. So on visiting Kolkatta after many years, the first meal I wanted was Chicken Kathi Rolls. On asking my hotel staff about which the best place for Kathi Rolls is, there was only one name- Kusum. Its almost as if this dish is known as Kusum Rolls instead of Kathi rolls!
However, the experience is very different from the image. On Park Street branch of Kusum Rolls, the place is a tiny shop with only takeaways. It was crowded with youngsters who I guess have strong digestive systems! The conditions were unhygienic because all the rolls were being prepared on the same counter top with no cleaning. The components of the rolls are pre prepared- the maida paratha, chicken (or other meats), and pre cut onions (which is the worst item for harbouring bacteria). Trusting that the heating will keep me safe, I ordered 2 anyway.
The taste was poor, very spicy to the extent that the chilli took away whatever little taste the chicken might have had. The roll was all maida (refined flour), with no texture. Not...
