Paramount, nestled amidst the bustling bookstores and historic charm of College Street in Kolkata, is more than just a refreshment spot; it's a cherished nostalgia for Bengalis and a cultural gem that has stood the test of time.
Founded in 1918 by Nihar Ranjan Majumder, who hailed from Barishal, this establishment initially went by the name "Paradise." Little did he know that his venture would become an enduring legacy in the heart of Kolkata. Over the years, it transformed into "Paramount," and its history is a testament to the enduring spirit of entrepreneurship.
The star attraction at Paramount is undoubtedly their fabulous coconut drink, which has earned a special place in the hearts of patrons. Fresh coconut water, combined with a secret blend of flavors, creates a concoction that's nothing short of heavenly. It's the quintessential way to beat the sweltering Kolkata heat.
But the delights at Paramount don't stop at coconut drinks. Their menu boasts a range of delicious offerings, including Coko Malai, Mango Mania, Tamarind Sarbat, Rose Sarbat, Lassi etc. Each sip is a burst of flavor, offering a refreshing respite for thirsty visitors.
When you venture to College Street to explore its historic bookstores and immerse yourself in the world of literature, a visit to Paramount becomes a delightful tradition. It's more than just quenching your thirst; it's a cultural experience, a sip of history, and a slice of Kolkata's heritage.
Whether you're a Bengali seeking to relive cherished memories or a traveler eager to taste the essence of Kolkata's past and present, Paramount in College Street should be a top destination. It's where history, culture, and delicious beverages converge, making it an integral part of the...

I recently visited Paramount Syrups in Kolkata after hearing so much about it, and wow—it totally lived up to the hype! This place is an iconic part of the city, and I finally understand why people keep coming back.
First things first—the sherbets and syrups are absolutely delicious! I tried their Classic Rose and Khus (Vetiver) flavors, and both were refreshingly authentic, not overly sweet or artificial like some store-bought versions. The Bel (Wood Apple) sherbet was another winner—tangy, sweet, and perfect for Kolkata’s hot weather.
The ambiance is old-school charming—it feels like stepping back in time. The vintage soda fountain setup, the marble-top counters, and the friendly staff who’ve been working there for years add to the nostalgia. It’s not a fancy café, but that’s exactly what makes it special.
I also tried their fruit-flavored sodas, and they were fantastic—especially the Ananas (Pineapple) and Orange. They use real fruit extracts, which makes all the difference. The prices are super reasonable, so you can try multiple flavors without burning a hole in your pocket.
The only downside? It gets crowded, especially on weekends, but the wait is totally worth it. Whether you're a local or a visitor, Paramount Syrups is a must-visit for a true Kolkata experience.
4/5 stars—I’ll definitely be back to try more flavors! If you love traditional Indian drinks made the right way, don’t miss this gem.

Read moreVery old shop for sharbat only. Dab sharbat is famous. In that dab sharbat you can find the tender coconut flakes. Others are flavoured syrupy beverages. Costly but ok. In college life we went there frequently for a sip. But, now, I found a few problems there ! The service is poor The ambience could be far more competitive and welcoming Quality could be increased a lot For example, an unnecessarily high amount of crushed ice is mixed into our sharbat, we requested to decrease the amount but nobody cared. A few fresh fruit juice options could be far better than the flavoured creamy beverages ! The most famous dab sharbat really contains tender coconut water with coconut flakes - that is why this is so famous. Similar other items could also be prepared, like, crushed grape shake, mango pulp shake, aam poda sharbat (green mango roasted and crushed with pudina, rock salt, etc) should be a blockbuster here ! An old admirer (Bengali) was comparing the brand (paramount) with those like Haldiram, Rally's, Aminia, etc. He remarked that "the non-bengali brands are progressing so quickly, expanding and opening outlets so widely but this Bengali brand is just advertising heritage and memories !" I think, the old man was not wrong ! In this era of competition let's see how long it does survive ! However, visiting once or on occasions maybe good for reminiscing the past heritage There are lots of options for improvement Fresh fruits icecream and juice and fresh fruits desserts will attract more...
