Happened to be in the hustling bustling area of Dadar, when we decided to have our meal at the Yellow Chilli Restaurant! A brand owned by the Legendary Master Chef Mr. Sanjeev Kapoor! Had heard a lot about the amazing experience that people had in the past who had visited the outlet, so decided to experience it for myself!
Heading straight to the food and drinks tried at The Yellow Chilli -
To all their customers, they offer Roasted Papad with some chutneys to munch on till you wait for your order. We like the papads so much that we asked for the the fried masala papads. Good in taste, but had become a little soggy by the time we started having. We then started with our meal with couple of soups - Tomato Basil Shorba and Desi Manchow Soup! The restaurant serves their soups in 2 portions - full or half, so one can pick and choose depending on their requirement. Tomato soup had a nice blend and rich thick broth, however I preferred their Machow Soup. Oriental soup had a Desi Tadka added to it, nice and spicy!
After the soups, we moved to appetisers. We had heard a lot about the Shabnam ke Moti. And we were surely not dis-appointed! Cheese filled mushrooms! Heaven for Mushroom Lovers, don't miss! Next we tried the Chanajor Garam Tikki! We all have had the road-side Chanajor Garam with masala and lime, The Yellow Chilli present this snack with a twist! Potato Patties filled with cheese spiced with chanajor garam masala (black gram) served with chutney! Yummy! Lastly we tried the Palak Cheese Karara Roll - Mini rolls filled with Spinach and Cheese! Palak taste is overwhelming, so those open to it, please try!
Along with food, we called for few mocktails - Peru Pyala, Masala Mint Cooler and Fatal Attraction! Again I would these recommend the drinks in the same order of preference! Peru Pyala is their signature dish and beautifully presented - Guava Juice with a hint of mint served in a red chilli rimmed margarita glass! Masala Mint Cooler was also very nice and refreshing - mint based topped with soda. Fatal Attraction is a lychee based drink, but green in color because of the curacao, lemon and flavoured soda.
The staff at the Yellow Chilli were extremely courteous and helpful, a special shout-out for our server - Mr. Gurpreet who recommended us the dishes which we can try - So for the mains, we were recommended to have the signature Indian curry - Shaam Savera! Apparently, this was the first dish presented in the show - Khana Khazana by Legendary Master Chef Mr. Sanjeev Kapoor and we definitely wanted to try this one! Paneer Stuffed Soft Palak Koftas on a creamy tomato gravy! On the sweeter side! Delightful and Must try! Along with this we ordered a relatively spicy curry which was Paneer Tikka Lababdar. All of us have had the Paneer Tikka as a starter, but again a nice twist to the dish.
Amongst Indian Breads, we called for the Mirch Pyaaz ki Roti, Laccha Paratha and Butter Naan. Would specially recommend their signature Mirch Pyaaz ki Roti. Other Indian breads are nice too. Also would like to mention about their Muka Pyaaz, served with the meal. Onions spiced with red chilli just adds to the flavours. Scrumptious!
After this we ordered some Dal-Rice. For Dal, we again ordered their signature Dal - Lalla Mussa Dal. The taste of Ghee is so rich in this preparation! You would just loved this version of Lentils cooked with spices! The best combination was with Steam Rice! Divine!
Lastly, to end our meal, we called for a couple of desserts - Mukhwaas Kulfi and Gulab-e-Gulkand. I am a fan of Paan, hence liked both the desserts! Gulab Jamun is a jumbo sized gulab jamun not the small ones, so may suffice 2 people. Non Paan lovers, I would recommend to go for Gulab-e-Gulkand and the Shahi Tukda.
All-in-all, I had a fantastic experience at The Yellow Chilli! Would like to thank the staff, the management and most importantly Mr. Sanjeev Kapoor for opening this brand and letting all of us taste his recipes and experience the magic! Highly Recommended, please do...
Read moreWe had a wonderful lunch earlier this month at the Oven Fresh restaurant, Shivaji Park. First and foremost, hats off to Ms. Arpita. We have been to many restaurants having menus with unknown dishes, and it is the first time that the person serving us actually knew the exact ingredients of all dishes on the menu! When asked about a particular dish, Ms. Arpita immediately knew what it contained and whether or not it was spicy without having the necessity to rush to the kitchen each time to inquire with the chef. Well done! We were also happy to have hot food for the Wok (set on a stand with a candle beneath).
The restaurant ambience is fine, but insufficient for a group larger than 6-7 as it is cramped and everyone does like sufficient elbow room. The music was a tad loud when we entered, but they lowered it at our request.
Coming to the food- the prices are very high, but we were aware of the same and had decided nevertheless to come here as we had dined here earlier a few times and were keen to try out their new menu. What was disappointing was not the food but the quantity (that is why the 4 stars and not 5). The Wok mentioned an elaborate list of ingredients and we assumed it would be a large bowl, but when it arrived, it turned out to be a small bowl (see the photo - it is a bit blurred though) while the rice which came with it (we ordered steamed rice as we did not want noodles) was in a mid-size bowl. For the price of Rs.850/- the bowl of veggies was ridiculously small.
The dish of jackruit enchiladas was ok, nothing exceptional, and the cucumber-mint-apple juice- genoa lemon cooler was a bit sour, with an excess of mint leaves.
The dish of the day was the appetizer we had - absolutely unique!
Our favourites - Beverages: the spicy pear, apple punch (don't miss this!); and the watermelon, basil, lime cooler Soup: Asparagus endamame (most interesting and something you must try) Sandwich: Jalapeno, hummus, tabbouleh, multigrain (packed with flavours and sufficiently filling) Appetizer: Parsley tabbouleh, mango, beetroot hors d'oeuvres (outstanding!)
By all means dine here if you are willing to spend on a grand meal, but don't expect too much in terms of quantity especially if you are in a group of three or more and hope to share. Dishes like the sandwich, appetizer and the wok we had are not sufficient to be shared. You won't have enough for yourself if you want to politely share!
Two things to note- 6.5% discount if you pay by cash/Gpay and a 5% discount if you pay by credit/debit card Check the bill. If the service charges have been added, you can request them to remove it and it is up to you to give a tip (we did because they deserved it)
Thanks to the team - Ms. Arpita, Mr. Ismail, and Mr. A. Ali (not sure if I can recall the third name correctly - apologies if it is incorrect) for their non-intrusive, outstanding service. Non-intrusive because at no time they rushed to clear the table or interrupt our dining experience to inquire if we required anything more. They waited till we called them to order the next dish. Thanks to Deepak, too, at the entrance who held the taxi door open for my elderly relatives.
Due to the less quantity for the high price, we may not dine here as frequently as we would have liked to, but perhaps we will return for some other special occasion to try out some more of the unique dishes - with...
