If Matunga East is the Go-To destination for South Indian snacks then Dadar West & Girgaum are the Go-To places for Maharashtrian snacks.
The trail starts from Dadar Station West with Mama Kane and ends up at Shivaji Park with Aswad. There are many restaurants which are worth their salt and every bit of our penny.
This establishment is easily 60+ years old in the business. It was started soon after we got Independence, by a gentleman Shri Kaka Tambe whose sole aim was to provide affordable meals to the working class. It started off as a thali-joint / meals-only restaurant [Khanaval as we call it in Marathi]. They also had a sister concern in Girgaum called Kona Restuarant which was diagonally opposite Gai Wadi.
Location: As you come out of Dadar Station on the Western side, keep walking on Ranade road till you reach the first signal [you will pass INOX Nakshatra on your left] Once you reach the signal, you see a TITAN showroom on the opposite side of the road. Cross the road, take a left and keep walking along the footpath, after about 6-8 shops, you land outside this restaurant.
Food: I started off with a Batata Wada which was nice, cripsy and served with a red chutney made from dry red chilies and garlic. Generally most Maharshtrian items are served with green coconut chutney, peanut chutney etc but this was a welcome change. It was pungent and mild spicy.
Then came the Thalipeeth, which a deep fried pan-cake type dish which is made from a mixture of flours, like rice, wheat, gram, ragi etc with chopped onions for flavour also served with the red chutney.
MUST HAVE:Puneri Misal
Batata Wada Kothimbir Wadi Thalipeeth Sadudana Khichdi Batata Puri Kokum Serbet / Amla Serbet / Nimbu Serbet / Chaas [Refreshers made from natural ingredients]
They also have a variety of semi-lunch dishes which keep changing as daily [see the small menu-card attached]
The bill for the above 2 dishes + 1 cup of tea will not go beyond Rs.90 per person.
Its a Go-To restaurant for Maharashtrian delicacies.
Update on July 2nd 2015:
I walked in here for breakfast and ordered for a Misal first up.
This is by far one of the best Misal I have had so far and will remain so for a long long time. Its made up of 3 layers, Pohe forms the lowermost layer, topped by the sprouts and gravy and topped by some farsan / chiwda. The misal is mild in flavour and every spoon is a delight. The quantity is is also delightful, if you have it with a Pav then I m sure one is done till a late lunch. One must eat it to believe it.
Sabudana Wada was next up. It was crisply fried but it wasn't oily when served. It has a proper mix of all required ingredients but it tasted...
Read moreThis is my go to haunt when in Dadar West and I am in need to devour simple yet delicious home cooked food, Misal and Piyush.
The new location is very humble but is cleaner than the old one and has AC sitting area. There are only couple of tables so chances are one might have to wait. Impossible to park your vehicle infront of this place but if you are on a bike Shivaji park lanes are welcoming and just few metres away MCGM car parking.
This time when we went we ordered palak paneer, vatana usal and chapatis which were delicious. We ordered Piyush too which is something I cherish a lot and expect them to maintain the flavours, after all, they enriched marathi cuisine by developing Piyush. Palak paneer is not the Punjabi palak paneer which we are used to, this one has unpretentious quality accustom to home cooked Maharashtrian food. Misal is mellow and delicious. People who love spicy misal or any other spicy food, this is not the place for you.
The owners are friendly, always greet you with cordial smile. I appreciate their effort of maintaining the taste of food even after moving to a...
Read moreSometimes, simple things can transform your life. My good friend Nrupal and I entered this place parched, thanks to a long walk. This seemed like a hole in the wall place, but when we climbed a narrow flight of stairs, it had reasonable amount of seating. We had the solkadi. It was truly life changing for me. The punch from the garlic and chili was so good! THE best I've had anywhere in my life. 10 stars just for that solkadi ❤️ I downed 2 more glasses, making it a hat trick. Their sabudana wada was also lovely. The person serving our food was sweet and patiently answered all our questions. I will definitely return and sample more of their food. It's a very difficult situation as this is next to prakash, another favourite place of mine😭 but a good...
