Punjab Grill is synonyms with North Indian cuisine. If you visit any of its outlets, you are ensured a fine dine experience. Visited one of its 5 outlets in Mumbai, the one in Fort, which is apparently the latest one, if I am not wrong opened this year. Beautiful entrance, big windows, give a very royal look from outside as well as from inside also, the moment you step a foot in. At the entrance there is a huge glass chandelier which looks so beautiful. They have a ground and level 1 seating. The bar section is small but serves the purpose. They have a wide range of tables which serve purpose from a couple to an entire family. We were lucky enough to get a table besides their big window and it was a beautiful setup indeed.
We started with soups, they have a couple of soups for the veggies, so tried both of them. Tamatar Dhaniya Shorba and Khumb Pudina Shorba. I like the hint of smoky effect given to the Tomato soup but I preferred the Mushroom Soup which mint. Both the soups came along with a mini-kulcha. Kulcha was yum! Neither of the broths were mixed with cream hence the soups were light.
Moving to the starters, we had them in tasting portions as mentioned above. We started with Multani Paneer Tikka, Dahi Ke Kebab and Bhutteyan de Kebab served with mint chutney and onions. The Malai Paneer used in the Tikka starter was extremely soft and fresh. Curd used in the preparation tones down the spices. Punjab Grill source their Cottage cheese from one place which powers all their outlets. Recommended to have. Next we had the Bhutteyan de Kebab. Kebabs made of sweet corn, fennel and chillies. Dahi Ke Kebab again very soft garnished with an almond on top. Green chillies were used however because of the curd, it was a bit on the sweeter side. Amongst all, would definitely recommend Multani Paneer Tikka.
We tried couple of more starters, Tandoori Shakarkand and Tandoori Gucchi. Sweetpotatoes roasted and grilled with chaat masala. Those open to sweetpotatoes can definitely go for this. The stand-out for me was the Tandoori Gucchi. They use an expensive and rare mushroom - the morcel mushroom to prepare this dish along with saffron. Please note this starter does cost a lot, so please note before ordering, but those who love mushrooms would cherish this amazing starter dish! Must try for sure!
To go with the food, we ordered few mocktails - Punjab Grill has a special section for a variety of Virgin Mojitos. Had ordered the Dhaniya Mojito, Rola Cola, Meetha Patta and Pineapple & Coconut. Would recommend these drinks in the same order, definitely recommending the first 2. Mojitos were blended well and were refreshing. Rola Cola had sweet and sour mix with mint and black salt. Meetha Patta as the name suggests was on sweeter side and Paan Patta. Though I am a fan of Paan and Gulkand, felt the combination didn't go to well for me. Neither did the Pineapple & Coconut drink.
From the mains, we tried couple of vegetables - Paneer Lababdar and Pyaz Wali Bhindi. None of the vegetables are on the spicier side, so you can pick and choose the combinations accordingly. Cream used in Paneer vegetable made the gravy rich and thick. Pyaz Wali Bhindi was prepared in a very homely way so less of oil used and again lady fingers tossed in masala appropriately. We also had the signature Punjab Grill Dal - black dal, rajma and cream. Tasted nice! We had this with couple of Indian breads - Lachha Paratha and Ambarsari Aloo Kulcha. Clear favorite among the two was the Kulcha. They come in two stuffings, either potato or cottage cheese so you may pick accordingly. Lastly we had the Tarkari Kesari Biryani - basmati rice tossed with vegetables and masalas with saffron and ghee used while making. Super Yum and delicious. Must try!
Finally moving to the desserts to end our meal, again we tried tasting portions of 4 desserts - Jalebi with Rabdi and Garam Doodh, Rasmalai, Kalakand and Kesar Phirni. All were very good, but my preference would be - Jalebi, Kesar Phirni, Kalakand...
Read morePunjab Grill has approx 6 outlets across Mumbai, and we recently had the opportunity to vist their outlet at Kala Ghoda. It can be easily spotted, since it is right opposite to Jehangir Art Gallery.
Coming to the amazing food! We had their:
BEVERAGES- MEETHA PATTA MOJITO- It is a beverage based on beetel leaf (Paan), and also included bits and pieces of paan along with gulkand it in. The drink was so refreshing and energizing, it will make you feel refresh just at the very first sip. 5/5
MANGO CORIANDER (FROZEN MARGARITA)- We took a while to figure out what exactly did the taste remind us of, and after finishing the entire margarita, we came to the conclusion that it tasted exactly like Mango bite! It brought back so many childhood memories of ours!
STARTERS-
MULTANI PANEER TIKKA- This was our favourite amongst all the othet starters. The Paneer was melt-in-mouth soft! It was super delicious, and perfectly smoked! 5/5
TANDOORI BROCOLI MALAI MAARKE- Chose this starter only if you are like brocoli, but the taste of the masala and the cream, made it worth eating. 4/5
DAHI DE KEBAB- This one was an interesting dish! The outside looked like any other normal kebab, but when sliced cut, the creamy, rich, sweet dahi was filled in. Cute little almonds made them all the more delicious. However, since our has a but of a sweetness, we suggest you to go for it only if you want a bit of sweetness in your starters. The mint chutney at the side, helped in adding a bit of spiciness to the kebab.
BHUTTEYAAN DE KEBAB- This kebab is made of Sweet corns and chillies, with a bit of fennel and lemon. It had a nice texture and was a bit on the heavier side. Super healthy option!
MAIN COURSE-
PANEER LABABDAR- Cottage cheese in cashew based gravy along with onions, tomatoes and a bit of cream. Not at all spicy, but super delicious and good. You will literally lick your fingers off!
GAJAR MATTAR TE AMBARSARI VADI- Carrots, green peas along with lentils dumplings (The vadi), which were in cute tiny pieces. We tasted the vadi separately, and it was super good. This dish felt more homecooked and soothing!
MASALA KARELE- We were skeptical about ordering Bitter gourd but thought of giving it a go. The karele came in with a really good filling, half open, and the bitterness of the karela only set in after a few bites. It didn't taste bitter otherwise. The gravy with which it came in, was sweet, which helped and complimented the karela well! A perfectly balanced dish.
KADHAI MURGH- Boneless chicken leg with a bit of capsicum and onions, in red gravy. We loved how it tasted so homey, and delicious.
DAL TADKA- Yellow dal (Moong, Masoor, Toor) along with a tadka of red chilli just reminds you of home cooked daal chawal. We recommend you to have this dal with steamed rice because that would enhance the flavour of the dal. Super healthy option!
DAL PUNJAB GRILL- Kali dal, Rajma along with cream. Rajma is love which we all can agree upon. The buttery taste in the dal really comes out well along with the tomatoes. What's more to say?
BREADS- TANDOORI LACCHA PARANTHA- Made of whole wheat flour which is a good option than the maida flour.
DESSERTS JALEBI, RABDI TE GARAM DUDH- Definitely a recommended dessert, since they make it all fresh, and the jalebi was not sticky but tasted sugary and sweet, but not too much.
GULAB JAMUN- Not being a gulab jamun fan and still loving it, really says something, doesn't it? The gulab jamun had lots of pista, and saffron inside which just added the texture and flavour. 5/5 We were recommended to have their PAAN SHOTS which was just like cherry on top. Super refreshing and good to have after a heavy meal. The chefs at Punjab Grill really know their food, because each and every dish has been so thoughtfully prepared and served with so much care you can literally see their efforts on your plate. The service was impeccable, fast and efficient. 5/5 for them! Would love to visit again! Thank you so much...
Read morePunjab Grill is a North Indian and Mughlai Cuisine restaurant with over 5 branches in Mumbai. They serve both vegetarian and non vegetarian food and have high chair available for kids. They have valet parking available too. We had early dinner plans so visited this place by 6.30 and it was a good time as we could find place easily but by 8 (even on a weekday) the restaurant was almost full and we could see a mix of people from couples to family groups and large party audiences also.
To the dinning experience:
SHORBA WITH KULCHA Khumbh Pudina Shorba – Khumbh Pudina Shorba was an exotic soup from the presentation to the taste; this one had wild mushroom broth with mint and served with a small portion of kulcha topped with butter and coriander. A nice start to the meal.
TANDOOR Vegetarian Kebab Platter - We opted for platter which included the below 5 varieties of dishes as below:
Tandoori Shakarkandi – Rectangular pieces of sweet potatoes are roasted and sprinkled with anaar (pomegranate), pudina, chaat masala and served with walnuts and anar saunth chutney. They were really flavourful.
Bhutteyaan De Kebab – Tikki shaped kebabs made with sweetcorn, potato mash fennel and chillies and topped with chaat masala.
Dahi De Kebab – made with golden crusted, curd, cardamom, green chillies and coriander which are fried till they are golden brown and served with mint chutney on the side; these kebabs will just melt in your mouth.
Multani Paneer Tikka – Immaculately soft cottage cheese marinated in curd, mint, fenugreek and green chillies. This was nice although the paneer pieces were bit hard at the end.
Tandoori Broccoli Malai Maar Ke – Two big Broccoli pieces were marinated dipped in cheese, cream, curd, cardamom, cashew marination. Delicious in taste.
MAIN COURSE
Paneer Makhani – Maing regional cooking exciting and experiencing exciting flacours and fragrances these dishes have a history behind each receipes. Paneer Makhani is a sweet gravy based main course dish which has Cottage cheese with makhani gravy. We totally loved its super yummy taste.
Dal Punjab Grill – A comfort food and the most loved dish in the Indian Kitchen; dal (lentils) has mix of spices and aromatic ingredients to enhance the taste. Dal Punjab Grill is one of their signature dishes and it was exceptional. It comprised of kaali dal, with tomato puree and rajma topped with cream and butter.
Steam Rice – A versatile dish which can be combined and presented in many forms from hot steaming rice to complex biryanis. We opted for Steam rice i.e. basmati long grain rice which was served hot and went perfectly well with Paneer Makhani as well as Dal Punjab Grill.
DESSERT
Shahi Tukda topped with Rabdi – The best way to end the scrumptious meal is on a sweet note. Not only amazing in presentation, this was true to its name in taste too. It had a perfect balance of sweetness with the creaminess of rabdi. Here the breads were cut into round shape and deep fried after which they are dipped in sugar syrup and drizzled wit thin layer of rabdi topped with dry fruits and edible silver.
DRINKS
Pineapple and Coconut Mocktail - Coconut syrup with some fresh pineapple pieces; this was a refreshing drink.
Apple and Cinnamon Iced Tea – An ice tea flavoured with apple and cinnamon. Cool drink.
Overall, this place gives you the quality and good food with a rich fine dine experience. With the top notch service provided, we would like to specially thank Mr.Froilan, their restaurant manager, as well as the staff and service team who were really kind and always serving with a smile as well as gave really nice suggestions for the food.
