This was my second visit to kala ghoda cafe . The first time I visited I loved their Green monster pizza and the cold coffee . This time again we ordered the same thing and added chicken and cheddar burger .

This time I had a problem with everything .

Firstly the coffee we had ordered. Cold Coffee , the menu said it will have sugar but there was none. When we informed them that there is no sugar and the menu says otherwise . We got a reply saying we don't serve it with sugar . We asked them to add ice cream which was extra chargeable, but 250 for a single scoop !!! So in the end we paid 500+ taxes for cold coffee with ice cream.

When we got our green monster pizza . It was bland and there was no salt in the food . When we informed the manager he said we serve it without salt !! I informed him I have had this pizza before and again got the same answer . It's served without salt . That was another level .Food is served without salt.

After which we got our Chicken N Cheddar burger .The burger was one of the best burgers I have had in a while . The only saving Grace.

When we received the bill we were charged an extra 180 rs . When we asked them the reason for the extra charges for cheddar cheese , he called the great manger again . clarifying further we asked him why we were charged 630 for the burger when the menu says 450. To which this gentleman replied " we charge separately for chandar cheese ". So you charged for cheese extra when your menu says Chicken and cheddar cheese burger . We never asked for extra cheese . The staff was arrogant and indifferent. It felt like we were doing a favour on the staff by visiting the outlet . Rude staff!!!!!!!!!!!!

On top of everything there was a cockroach on the table . When we told the waiter he ignored it. I thought they would say it comes with the burger .

Will never visit this crap hole again . Where basic H of hospitality was not there . Adding the picture of the bill and cockroach pic as well . When you are charging a premium your service should be top notch . I can understand if there was a human error but ignorance is not acceptable.

Can't visit for a burger again. Might get something else and they say ' sir ye aysehi aata hai '.

Mediocrity Served with a Veil of Flair

When it comes to the Bombay dining scene, I’m always on the lookout for spots that truly stand out, especially after exploring the city’s most chaotic and vibrant establishments. But, I have to admit, my recent visit to Kala Ghoda Cafe didn’t quite live up to the hype.

Before heading to the 25th Kala Ghoda Art Festival, my partner and I followed the well-trodden path to this iconic spot, hoping for an experience that would do justice to the area’s cultural buzz. As we walked in, we couldn’t help but notice the crowd – a sea of expats clearly enjoying what the place had to offer. It felt like we’d arrived at the “it” spot, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were in the wrong movie. The energy was there, but unfortunately, the food? Not so much.

It was a dry day in Bombay thanks to Republic Day festivities, so we dived straight into the menu. Naturally, we went with the much-talked-about KGC Special Salad first, which came highly recommended. We had specifically asked for chicken to be added, but it was served on the side, which just felt off. Picture this: an artist given all the colors in the world but lacking any real direction. That’s how the salad felt. Fresh ingredients, yes, but the whole dish lacked definition and depth.

Then came the Margarita Pepperoni Pizza, which I was genuinely excited about. Unfortunately, what I thought would be a no-brainer was a complete letdown. The pizza base was thin but lacked any satisfying crunch, and the tomato sauce had an odd sweet taste that made me question if we’d been served dessert instead of pizza.

Finally, we decided to go for the Espresso Caramel Custard to wrap things up. It was decent but left a lot to be desired. A little less sugar and a stronger coffee kick would’ve turned this dessert into something to remember.

So, to shatter the myth — this wasn’t the dining experience I had imagined. Honestly, I’d sum it up as one that’s more about the aesthetic than the food itself. Not one for the foodies, but if you’re looking for a place to snap a shot for the Gram, maybe this one’s for you.

I visited Kala Ghoda Cafe for a lunch meeting this Monday (18.02.2024). I was meeting with a CXO from a very reputed company who was travelling from Delhi. We ordered two grilled chicken with a side of sauteed vegetables and one with mash respectively. The order took about 40 mins to make, when it finally came out, both were served with mashed potatoes. They took one back and disappeared for 10 mins. All this while the client kept on getting agitated because she would be getting late for her flight if the food got delayed. The one chicken that was served was so overcooked that cutting it with a knife and fork was a task. All of us just accepted that having lunch at KGC was a bad idea. I still decided to follow up on the second chicken as I was starving and already spent 45 mins at the cafe, going somewhere else will waste more time. A joke of a manager (Cruz) popped up and bought another overcooked chicken which was again served with mashed potatoes. His body language suggested that it's a normal practice for the food to get late. This is when I told them to cancel the order and get the bill. Cruz, without any attempt of a service recovery obliged and sent the food back. This was the only prompt service we received that day. He got the bill which we paid and stepped out. My meeting was ruined, the client wasted her time on a plate of overcooked chicken, I never got food at all and despite all this, despite being polite to the staff all along, the manager did not have the simple courtesy to apologize for the experience we had. On my way out, I told him the least he could've done was apologise to which I got a half hearted apology. I have seen local roadside food stalls being more on point with service and hospitality. Needless to say, this was my last visit to the cafe and I've urged everyone in my company to not waste their time at the cafe as well. Worst part is I sent a mail 3 days back expecting some revert, no...

⭐ Highlight: Caramel Custard That Stands Out Smooth, creamy, and topped with a rich caramel sauce — the caramel custard was easily the best part of the meal. A must-try here! ⸻ 🧼 Cleanliness – ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5) The café is tidy and well-kept. Tables were promptly cleared, and the marble-top finish gave a nice clean look to the setting. ⸻ 🪑 Ambience – ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5) Classic Kala Ghoda charm — wooden chairs, warm café vibe, and a relaxed atmosphere that works both for a casual meet-up or a solo coffee break. ⸻ 👩‍🍳 Service Interactions – ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5) The service was good — polite, attentive staff without being pushy. Orders came on time and with a smile. ⸻ 🍴 Food Item Breakdown – ⭐⭐⭐☆ (3/5) • Avocado Toast 🥑: Looked fresh with sprouts and cherry tomatoes, but taste-wise, it was just average. • Grilled Sandwich 🥪: Nicely toasted and served with mustard, but felt pretty basic — nothing memorable. • Pesto Pasta 🍝: Generous parmesan shavings and good portion size, but the flavors didn’t pop as much as expected. • Affogato ☕🍨: Coffee with ice cream is always a comfort, but here the espresso shot lacked punch. • Caramel Custard 🍮: The star of the menu! Perfect balance of sweetness and texture, worth visiting for this alone. ⸻ 😋 Final Food Feel Except for the dessert, most items leaned towards average café fare. Nothing bad, but nothing that would pull you back except that custard. ⸻ ✅ Final Verdict – ⭐⭐⭐☆ (3.5/5 overall) Kala Ghoda Café is great for caramel custard, coffee breaks, and its old-school café charm. Food overall is just average, but service and ambience make it a comfortable stop if you’re in the area.

Visited for lunch with some guests as this is one of the iconic places in Mumbai. Would split my review across 3 categories: Food, Service and Atmosphere: 1. Food was great as expected as this wasn't the first time had visited the place. Cottage Cheese Schnitzel was the surprise winner, a must order i would say. Flame grilled chicken was also really good. We ordered Sali boti as well and this is where the problem started (which i will cover in the service section below) 2. Service: While we clearly ordered the Sali Boti, the staff captured the wrong order and got the Sali Chicken. When we pointed out their mistake, instead of acknowledging their mistake the staff started arguing that he had confirmed and all the bullshit. The Manager said he will replace and get us the Sali Boti (Mutton) but then asked the waiter to charge us for the same and then didn't show up at all. We were not in a mood to argue and ended up paying for it. We also had kids and had ordered kids portion of pasta, even here the staff goofed up and served the regular pasta again not acknowledging their mistake. So while their food is good and the place might be iconic but staff had a sense of hubris and lack customer service. Its not about paying for the dish, its about customer service and how you manage a situation when its clearly your mistake. 3. Atmosphere: vibrant and old school feel. Their menu captures too many dos and don't but feel the rules are limited to the customer while the staff is least interested.
