Seemingly, Kitab Khana has replaced Strand Book Stall as the much-loved bookstore of South Mumbai. While Strand was tiny in comparison, Kitab Khana is a sprawling store, with a mezzanine and a new café (subko).

For over a year after a fire in the old café burnt down half the books in Dec 2020, we all continued to do chakkars of Kitab Khana but the half empty shelves were killing our appetite for book buying. It was a strange feeling. But in the past few years, the store has recovered well and has been deservedly restored to its past glory (of book stacking).

Along with Crossword Kemp's Corner and Title Waves Bandra, Kitab Khana completes the Triangle of Bliss for book lovers in Mumbai.

Kitab Khana shuts at 7:30, so you should get there early. Weekdays are easier to navigate the aisles, however even on a busy weekend, it's not difficult to browse.

The gentleman who mans the door is welcoming and friendly. Deserves a raise. The staff is quirky (one particular gentleman who doesn't hesitate to tell you not to bend a book cover while browsing 😂) and pretty responsive and helpful. 15% discounts on all books is a lifeline if you're a compulsive book buyer.

Love the Science and Business/Marketing books sections, their cookbook shelves are forever stocking new surprises, great section on architecture, next to wildlife and nature. If there's a book launch or an event, the food, architecture, design and wildlife section is sadly not accessible.

The mezzanine has a knockout selection of spiritual and self-help books. Great stuff. Cinema corner there too. Picked up some great titles on Hindustani Classical Music.

In the Kitab Khana neighbourhood, Nandan Coffee, gone crazily popular overnight, has opened right round the corner. But if you prefer an unassuming place, finish your book buying and walk down to Theobroma for a coffee and a croissant and their divine Opium Pastry. Or Malido café for some Parsi meals and great drinks options. Or walk a little further down to Knead by Moshe Shek or The (curiously tiny) Nutcracker. If it's a weekday you will find a table to read a few pages of your fresh picks.

For those heading to the Horniman Circle side, there's now Pret A Manger next to Starbucks. Wolf down a sandwich (myyyy sandwich).

Bonus tip for booklovers: One of the ATMs at the HSBC bank across the road spits out crisp 100 rupee notes, if you're ever in need.

Enjoy strolling around Fountain/ Kala Ghoda and continue to support our local...

Nestled in a quaint corner of the city, the bookstore with a coffee shop that I recently visited was a true haven for book lovers and coffee enthusiasts alike. The store's charming ambiance captivated me from the moment I stepped in, with its shelves lined with books of various genres and eras, exuding a nostalgic charm that transported me to another world. The cozy nooks and comfortable seating arrangements invited me to curl up with a good book or leisurely browse through the extensive collection.

The coffee shop, nestled within the bookstore, was a perfect complement to the literary atmosphere. The rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, teasing my senses as I perused the menu. The knowledgeable baristas were true coffee connoisseurs, passionately describing the different coffee blends and brewing techniques.

The service was impeccable, with the friendly staff always ready to engage in conversations about literature or coffee. Their passion for their craft was evident, and they made me feel truly welcomed. In addition to the fantastic coffee and books, the pastry selection was also noteworthy, with scrumptious treats that perfectly complemented my beverage.

One of the highlights of my visit was attending a book reading and discussion event hosted at the bookstore. It was a unique experience, combining the love for books and coffee in one setting. The engaging conversation and thought-provoking discussions with fellow book lovers left me inspired and enriched.

In conclusion, this bookstore with a coffee shop was a literary haven that stole my heart. The inviting ambiance, excellent coffee, delicious pastries, knowledgeable staff, and engaging events made my visit truly memorable. I am already eagerly planning my next visit to indulge in the perfect blend of books and coffee again. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates the magic of literature and a good...

Kitab Khana, located in Fort, is an establishment tailor-made for book lovers of all ages. Their immense selection of books means one can peruse the shelves for an entire evening and leave feeling content. The staff is very helpful and will advise you on what books to buy. The bookstore is also well organized, with a little seating area and a nice balcony where you can perch and read your book and observe people. They also have a Subko coffee shop inside with some good food and great coffee options. The seating for the Subko is also located in a nice little room with forest green walls that feels like a little campsite within the bookstore where you can refuel before going back to read more books. There isn't much to say about Kitab Khana except that it's bound to ignite the childlike wonder within you and instil you with that same feeling of entering a library for the first time. Super fun!

I've been visiting to Kitab Khana for 4 years now. Before the pandemic I use to spend a great chunk of my day here reading books. You are allowed to sit and read for as long as you want. There's History, Politics, Art, Philosophy, Fantasy Fictions, Classics, Religion, Spiritual, Self Help, Health, Business, Teen Fiction, Romance.. there's everything here. You will never leave this place empty handed, it has so much to offer. There is a small cafe inside, you everything everything from quick bites, coffees to full-fledged lunch. If I am not wrong they offer 20% on most of the books. The staff is very friendly. You will never not see a smile on their face. This place is #HEAVENONEARTH for the ones who love to lose themselves in books. If you don't enjoy reading books, visit Kitab Khana and that will change. This place made me fall in love with Reading.
