There are a few restaurants which build up a reputation and tend to lean on those credentials for way too long. Khyber is located at the turning of Kala Ghoda in South Mumbai and has been there since ages.
The restaurant itself seems small from the outside but is like a warren of caves once you enter with passageways leading to various rooms deep inside the building. The decor has exposed brick work which lends it a bit of charm.
What we were served: Makai ki Tikki, Vegetarian Kebab Platter, Dum Aloo Punjabi, Mushroom Peas Curry, Khasta Roti, Glory, Milky Way, Breeze and Jaljeera
Makai ki Tikki - Tikkis are a delight to bite into! The crispy outer surface of the tikkis give way to a soft inside that merges the mellow sweetness of corn, the mushy texture of potatoes and the gooeyness of cheese with tangy lemon juice and peppy garam masala. Indeed, every bite of these tikkis is an experience to savour.
Vegetarian Kebab Platter – Paneer Tikka, Mushroom Kebab, Baby corn Pakoras, Vegetable Chili Kebab and Reshmi Paneer. It is one of best kebab platter that can be served as starter or as an accompaniment. You'll probably see all kinds of vegetable combinations making up this platter.
Dum Aloo Punjabi - Dum Aloo Punjabi is one of the most popular North Indian Potato Curry, simply cooked with potatoes and creamy based kasuri methi flavored gravy. it’s truly a punjabi style dum aloo that has a tangy flavor of tomatoes and a sweet hint of onions.
Mushroom Peas Curry – Mushroom with peas is a great side dish consisting of mushrooms and peas in a spiced tomato curry with a touch of fenugreek leaves. This, North Indian curry in a creamy onion-cashew gravy flavored with mild aromatic Indian spices curry, goes well with rotis and rice.
Glory – You've had shrikhand and you've gorged on cheesecake but have you ever tried a shrikhand cheesecake. Why not blend the favourite flavours of srikhand with everyone’s favourite cheesy dessert? Shrikhand as a dessert is great, in itself. When we make a cheesecake out of it, it lightens up and works wonders with the combination. Brilliant!
Milky Way - An interesting version of kheer in which sweet boondis are used to thicken and flavour the milk. The dish is centered with a mould of warm boondi and is sunk in a bed of thick kheer. Trust us, this dish is the perfect fusion of two traditional Indian sweets. Slurp!
Breeze - It is a simple mixed drink that brings a little pineapple into the popular tint of cranberry. If you close your eyes and sip this berry breeze on a warm summer's day, you'd swear you were in the tropics. Truly the best drink we have ever had and we can’t get enough of it!
Jaljeera – It is really delicious and not only provides you relief but also helps in digestion. Go desi and sip on it throughout your meal
We just have one suggestion to reduce the service time but we can neglect that too considering the crowd they cater to and the quality they bring up with!
In a nutshell, Khyber enjoys an enviable position in the premium segment cuisine of the North-West Frontier Province and has created a niche for itself as one of the internationally acclaimed fine-dining restaurant...
Read moreBeing at Khyber is almost like travelling back in time which sounds hypothetical but literally this place situated in the by lanes of Kala Ghoda gives you the peace of mind with its soothing ambience and Arabic tunes played in the background. Entire restaurant is given the Arabic touch with all the wall paintings, lights, art work, entrances you won’t even feel once that you are in Mumbai and that too in a restaurant. Somewhere while exploring the different dining rooms it had I was almost lost in its good vibes and silence it resonates. They have sustained their food quality over decades serving lip smacking north Indian cuisine. This place is almost visited by top notch celebrity and artists. So you can just imagine what this place has to offer.
Food:
1 Tandoori Lamp Chops – It didn’t even look like a starter seeing the quantity of it …first impression almost was as if main course is served to us. Perfectly cooked in tandoor and marinated with cardamom, coriander spiced yoghurt. A must try as it is one of their in house favourites
2 Tangdi Kebab – Simply huge and delish those tangdi kebabs were. I would say value for money as I looked at the size of kebab. Though they were not that spicy but loved the taste of it as they were marinated with garlic turmeric yoghurt.
3 Chicken Biryani – Just to let you know it isn’t the dum biryani as we normally in most of the restaurants. It was prepared on tava so it might taste a bit different than the usual one. But overall to sum up it was flavourful because of the spices and chicken was diced into pieces and tender while munching.
4 Chicken Rara – Loved the texture of gravy which was thick and consistent. Chicken pieces were succulent and tender and in good proportion. Taste was oozing out of the gravy as it was served hot and it could serve upto people easily. We had it tandoori naan which was again fluffy.
5 Milky Way – After a grand feast it was time for some dessert. Seeing the variety of desserts in the menu was puzzled at the start. At the end came to a conclusion to go for the Milky Way. Highly recommended to go for it I’m sure you will thank me later….richness of rabdi surrounding the plate with moti chur laddoo placed in the centre. Total sindulgence it is.
Drinks:
1 Orchid Queen – Truly a queen which had its own vibe and flavour. Amalgam of Khus syrup, orange juice, lemonade and soda.
2 Watermelon Cooler – With such unusual weather in Mumbai it was time to chill down on something chilled and refreshing.
Service – Our attendant Mr. Satyajit aka satya is down to earth person. Humble and quick on his feet. Service provided by him is commendable. Not every attendant you meet will communicate more than one min. He was good by nature and pure by heart. Thank you satya for a wonderful service and hospitality.
