Yesterday, I had the worst experience on a night out in Chennai — thanks to KJ Nihal and his co-jockey (a man with pink hair). Two extremely petty bullies of human beings who find some random joy in embarrassing women.
For context, I am a regular customer at Watson’s and have been attending their Wednesday Karaoke nights for over six months. However, there have been repeated instances where my friends and I were personally targeted by KJ Nihal and his co-jockey. Several times, as soon as we finished a song, he would make a “public” announcement telling people to sing louder (because yes, he thinks this is India’s Got Talent). We've let this slide multiple times, but this man with a mic behaves like it’s his school, he’s the principal, and we’re his students.
The cherry on top of his subtle misogyny was last night. After I had finished my song, four to five songs later (sung by other random guests), a friend of mine got her turn. She had submitted a song she wanted to perform, and upon her turn, she felt a bit overwhelmed and asked me to join her so she would feel more comfortable. PLEASE NOTE: This was her song, and whether she sang it alone or with me would in no way affect KJ Nihal or the sleep he was going to get that night.
We began the song, and KJ Nihal and his co-jockey (both of whom seem to get some cheap thrill from targeting women) turned off the background music and signaled disrespectfully for me to come to KJ booth. He refused to resume the music until I sat down — a completely unnecessary spectacle on his part. At this point, everyone in Watson’s was watching KJ Nihal pull aside a regular customer who has always been polite to all staff.
He then proceeded to tell me that I had already performed one song and that he would not allow my friend to sing unless she did it alone. I explained to him that it was her song, and she wasn’t comfortable doing it alone — she had asked me to accompany her, and it wasn’t a big deal. The whole exchange felt like I was talking to a wall. Embarrassed by the situation, I walked away. On my way back, several people I know commented that I was being treated that way because I come here too often. (YEAH, I CERTAINLY WON’T BE BACK EVER AGAIN).
After speaking with the manager, I came to know that there have been several complaints made against this KJ and the way he treats people and embarrasses them. (Also, feel free to check the other Google reviews on here — I’m not alone in this). I then, approached him and his co-jockey (both of whom had publicly embarrassed me) and explained how they made me feel. I told them we come here as regulars to enjoy a chill night, and they were making it unnecessarily serious.
They both refused to acknowledge any fault in their behavior and instead told me how I should feel (“Not embarrassed,”- their words). After dictating how I should feel, KJ Nihal asked me what I expected from him and told me I had no place to tell him how to do his job. (So yes, ladies and gentlemen — besides being a misogynist, KJ Nihal is also a cocky snob.) He proceeded to justify his actions and saw zero fault in his behavior. I’ve never witnessed such a high level of misogyny and unprofessionalism.
I’ve always been a polite customer and was a regular. But I will NEVER be returning to Watson’s in Chennai again — thanks to this awful KJ Nihal and his co-jockey (the man with pink hair). I hope they sleep well at night knowing they embarrass people and make them feel uncomfortable...
Read moreThis is a place I have been recommending to people ever since I visited it. It was love at first sight! Yes, I was so happy that Chennai finally had a place with the most amazing ambience (that was first), food and people.
Ambience: I walked into one of the freshly painted buildings, where I could still see men working at around 8pm. It was hard to believe that there was a treasure hidden in a building was still being constructed. The restobar is located on the top.
As soon as we entered, I was awestruck at the woodwork, lighting, paintings, the design and the aesthetically placed bar. The entire place is divided into 4 areas. You walk into the door and towards the right find the seating area which is in the non-smoking, overlooking the GN Cherry Road.
When you walk towards the left you have a staircase, below which you would find a wooden rack with books and board games. The staircase leads you to a cozy couch which can seat about 5. And there’s a door which leads to a balcony where you can smoke.
Ok so let’s rewind and going from the left (not the staircase this time), we’re walking towards a glass door which leads to the smoking area. This has a snooker table and a small bar. You also have a TV.
Extremely creative huh?
Food: Let’s talk about the most important factor! FOOD! I love eating starters when I’m out drinking and I’m not really bothered about the main course part of the menu. So as usual, I ordered a lot of starters.
Kodi Karepak Vepudu—Chicken tossed in ground curry leaf and green chilli paste and spices. A twist to the usual kodi vepudu. Must try! Chilli chicken—this was one of the best chilli chicken I have had in a while with the right amount of spices. Chinese with a fusion of South Indian flavours. Crispy masaledar prawns—whole prawns marinated in spice mix and tossed with tadka of green chillies, curry leaves and onion. The prawns were crispy until I finished them. Pull apart bread (chicken tikka)—this the first time I was seeing a pull apart bread for real and this looked like those that we see in the videos. The bread comes with some oil in a little cup. I asked the waiter what it was and he said “poondu ka thel”, translating to garlic oil. This was the cutest thing that someone could have called a garlic oil! Ok concentrate! You’re supposed to pour the garlic oil on the bread and eat it. So when I pulled a piece from the bread, I got loads of mozzarella cheese and chicken pieces. I kind of felt, the bread could have been toasted for a while, with the chicken tikka could be a saucy gravy, so the bread doesn’t taste bland. I asked for some ketchup and ate mine with it. I wish I had the appetite to eat more 🙈
Service: You have extremely friendly people around, running around the place (literally), bringing your order on time and doing everything to make it an extra special experience for you.
