THIS REVIEW WAS ORIGINALLY POSTED IN MAY 2023. An update was added at the bottom in September 2023.
I had been going to Monsieur Spoon for lunch every Sunday for more than a year and a half and gave it a 5-star rating after my first few visits.
Unfortunately sometime in May 2023 significant and unexpected changes were made that have since led me to reconsider going there.
Before, their food portions were generous and affordable - especially when you consider that the % added for tax and service were included in the cost of the food and beverages.
This is no longer the case. Now - suddenly - 10% is being added to the total bill. To make matters worse, while the prices have not gone up, the size of the portions has gotten considerably smaller - for example the quiche is about ¾ of its previous size and the amount of smoked salmon on the bagel barely covers it.
I realize that the COVID pandemic negatively affected the economy in Ubud and Bali as it did everywhere else around the world. However this post-pandemic trend to try to recover lost income by increasing prices and reducing portion sizes has negatively affected an experience that - for me at least - was something I used to regularly looked forward to.
First time customers might be totally unaware of the changes Monsieur Spoon has made. However for this local resident and former regular customer, the pleasure I once enjoyed there has decreased significantly.
UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2023 - I have since found out that Monsieur Spoon was sold several months ago and the new owners are responsible for the changes.
ATTENTION NEW OWNERS - even your own staff acknowledges that they are not happy with the way you are operating things.
For example - 1) due to your new restrictions when they ran out of ice (which they did when I was recently back there) I was told that they were not permitted to solve this by buying some bags of ice at the mini-market almost next door because they said they had to wait until the ice vendor’s next delivery.
You have not had bottles of sparkling water in stock for at least 6 weeks.
The most ridiculous thing I experienced was that the last time I was there YOU WERE OUT OF COFFEE!!! What kind of café runs out of coffee?!?!?
NEW MANAGEMENT - you have some SERIOUS PROBLEMS! Please get...

You probably saw so bad toilet only in movies in gas station. Smelly, dirty, everything is old and abounded.
Stuff JUST DONT CARE
they keep huge garbage bin right in the dining area. 1 meter from the table.
Croissants, pastry, etc are NOT FRESH. They had died days ago. Stuff smile in your face, say “oh, sorry”, but they don’t give AF at all. I know how people can pretend here if they don’t care.
Next. Food. If you don’t want to be poisoned from something cooked days ago, frozen and unfrozen in a microwave in a dirty kitchen — leave.
I read many reviews here, and it was not 1 day issue. They had same problems 1 and 2 years ago.
If you read reviews carefully — you will find several stories about lasagna, made hot in a microwave. I had the same. And it was unbeatable. I canceled and give this nightmare lasagna something back to the kitchen.
Same we did with wagyu signature, soup. Coffee also was poor.
I don’t know how they survive and why no any pest controls or any sanitary government controls still didn’t close this “cafe”. It more looks like money wash machine, where they don’t need customers, and can allowing themself to pay to stuff just to be weird, unprofessional, and just hanging around.
If there would be a possibility to rate this place as a “zero” or “-10” — it would be...
Read moreWas in Monsieur Spoon Ubud for brunch on Sunday 17/7 Food was good but the overall customer experience was horrible! First, the waiter took our order (not writing it down on paper or iPad or something) by just memorizing it. We ordered two salmon and eggs, a latte, and one Bali mix juice. after she received our order she came back again to inform us that the bread is finished but we can substitute it with either white bread or bagels. We chose bagels. The food was good but when its time to pay, they gave us the wrong bills from other tables. And at the end, the cashier asked us what did we eat and drink because they didn't input our order in the POS system because it was never written down on anything, to begin with! The other waiter went to clean our table with a hostile look (which was closed to the cashier area) and shouted to the cashier that there were Extra Bagels too. and funny that the cashier was the girl who took our order in the first place and she can't even remember the earlier situation. We told them it was a substitute and not an EXTRA! The unfriendly behavior of the staff is too apparent to be ignored! It feels like we were being accused of not telling them what we had. Overall experience was one-star, It feels like we were in a market and...
