An impressive collection of artwork relating to Bali that spans over a century, all nestled in gorgeous gardens. You be given a small book at the entrance which details the history of the museum, among other subjects, which makes a nice keepsake.
You can easily spend several hours here just browsing the many works, but if you want to stay even longer they offer various workshops, dance performances, and a comfortable cafe with library (which your admission ticket grants a complimentary drink at). Rice fields and a full restaurant are also on the grounds.
In addition to the displayed works, various skilled artists work on the grounds creating impressive pieces, and you can purchase these directly from their creators. If you are a serious collector, an exhibition hall offers for purchase more expensive pieces from contemporary Balinese artists, whose works are displayed elsewhere in the museum.
Coming here is a fantastic way to spend a day without straying far from downtown Ubud. However if you do come, please be respectful and do not photograph the artwork. I witnessed more tourists than not completely ignoring the signs and photographing every piece. That's not how one should...
Read moreVery disappointing.Art works and building not well maintained. Many larger paintings are stacked against the walls on the floor not hung.In fact there is not much at all to see. Some rooms are just full of the same artist, style, size or theme so not much variety. Lots of very small paintings while larger ones remain on floor not hung. I could not find the much photographed (on google) large contemporary rice fields painting. I generally felt that very little care and attention had been given to the curation of this gallery and the experience for the visitor. The Kamastan style paintings are mounted so high up near the top of the ceiling (maybe 6 metres) you cannot see them, enjoy them or start to appreciate the intricate stories they tell. Very disappointing. There is a high entrance fee, which includes a glossy 150 page booklet of founding family and a complimentary cup of tea or coffee. I think the booklet should be a choice to purchase and more effort should be put into managing the museum and works of art. Not...
Read moreAs an art buff (specifically in regional art), this museum blew me away.
The collection of art, especially the modern art wong, is absolutely priceless. There are really showstopping large paintings, as well as ones by extremely renowned Indonesian artists that cannot be found online. These are artworks that other museums would foreseeably show as part of southeast Asian art exhibitions.
The buildings seem to be purpose built to house artworks, and the level of ambition and design is what other national art galleries aspire towards.
It is quite a feat to be keeping such a large and important collection, and although the conditions of some of the works is not the most ideal by western conservation standards, it appears necessary in keeping the artworks accessible to a large audience. An admirable endeavour.
All the staff were very friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. We were admiring some of the outdoor art installations when we happened to bump into Mr Agung Rai himself, which is a delight. He is humble, quiet...
