Belly Bandit Menteng South Jakarta January 2025
Tomato Soup for 62 K IDR++
Top class tomato soup is something one may not find easily in old J-town, i am glad @dimas_subagio convinced me to try this one after our last visit. The tomato soup itself has a great texture, and the dollops of cream clearly elevate the experience. Personally, i would have preferred a hearthier and creamier texture, but i get how that may not really resonate with most others. What is important is how the texture works as a dip for the grilled cheese sandwich. The soup is a bit on the sweeter side, but it does work well with the salty butteriness of the sammie.
Now the sammie itself is a fine speciment of a grilled cheese - again, this is something that may be hard to come by in Jakarta. However, even with the proper crust and cheesiness, i would argue that a bit more browning and a bit more cheese melting would really take it to the next level. That being said, perhaps a bit of pepper on the soup or adding a bit of peppery cheese (which i fully understand is hard to find around these parts) would really hit it home.
Anyways, the 68 K IDR++ Chocolate Peanut Butter Milkshake really takes the cake. Definitely a diabetes hazard - so do be warned - but hey it's a rare treat not to be had everyday. Naturally i would always opt for a bit more creaminess, but i guess for this price range it's quite a fair thickness.
Last time i was here i had the 70 K IDR++ fish burger which was middling at best, so perhaps their more textured breads do make better sandwiches than their burger buns.
All in all, although it is quite pricey, Belly Bandit is a fairly priced joint considering just how central it is. The quality is top notch, but i guess it does leave you wanting just a little bit more.

As I wanted a light lunch, I ordered Rosti & Smoked Salmon all day breakfast. I have to say this is one of the more disappointing meal I had in a while, especially considering the 135,000 price pre-tax and service.
The potato rosti was soggy and limp with zero crunch, and as the foundation of the dish it ruined the entire dish and gave it no texture. After hesitating, I tried to complain but the kitchen only said it is supposed to be that way. The flavor was also imbalanced, dominated with acidity that doesn't complement well with the smoked salmon's saltiness. I thought the shaved pickled zucchini will be sweet, but it was all vinegar, topped with the sour cream on top of the rosti and without any other sauce or dressing, the entire dish just tasted sour, except for the plain poached egg and the salty smoked salmon, without any sweetness to cut the acidity.
Overall this particular dish was disappointing and I don't recommend it. It's very chic and easy on the eye, the flavor is not there tho.
That said I'm not writing off everything entirely. My friend loved his california burger, and I tried a bit of my friend's burnt end mac&cheese and it's good. I just happen to have...
