Dear Semaja Menteng & Ismaya Group Management,

I’m writing to express my disappointment regarding our experience at Semaja Menteng on Friday, 11 July 2025.

My friend — a regular customer — booked the VIP room, and we checked in around 6:00 PM. We had a great start to the evening, enjoying a wonderful meal and ordering two bottles of gin.

However, around 9:30 PM, the karaoke system suddenly stopped. We asked the server, and after a slow response, she told us that the karaoke was only available for four hours unless we ordered another bottle. This was frustrating for two reasons:

It hadn't even been four hours since we checked in.

This condition was never communicated to us upfront.

After some debate, they eventually turned the karaoke back on — and we did, in fact, order more bottles. But then, at 10:20 PM, the karaoke stopped again, and once again we were told to buy another bottle to continue.

Despite this frustrating back-and-forth, we ended up ordering four bottles in total. Not because of good service or a great atmosphere, but because we were pressured into doing so just to keep the music going. That’s not hospitality — that’s coercion.

Even worse was the attitude of the staff and manager. They kept robotically repeating, “Kami hanya menjalankan SOP,” as if that justified poor communication, lack of flexibility, and zero sense of customer care.

This was one of the worst service experiences we've had, especially for a VIP room booking. A wonderful meal was completely overshadowed by a service culture that showed no understanding of how to treat guests — especially those already spending significantly.

For a restaurant under the Ismaya Group, we expected better. We will not be recommending Semaja Menteng for events with colleagues or family. It’s shameful to see a good brand ruined by such a rigid and...

A new restaurant in Menteng, Jakarta. (Only open for dinner time, hence from 5pm) I like the concept, modern twist of Indonesian cuisine in a very nicely designed vault-ish space. Loads of red brown bricks and beautiful semi-outside bar. There are 5 signature cocktails. All at 135,000++ So I tried all. Since I don't like anything foamy on top, i don't recommend Pletok and Kopi Talua. It's rather too experimental, I would say. I like dry and stirred drinks, my best pick is Wedang and Soda Gembira. But not much of the julep drink, Bandrek. I would say cocktails are not classic, but if you want to drink something easy with Indonesian flavour and twist, not bad. 3.5/5 They offer loada of foods, fish, meat and all. But not so much on vegan options. Since loads of bumbu(seasoning) is based on terasi - dried prawns, I don't think it's really for vegans. But I think the kitchen can be flexible to accommodate your needs. I had this Urap thing, Bali-twist coconut shredded things like salad. Nice. And sambals are nice as well! Highly recommended. The barramundi soupy thing served with aromatic rice is highly recommended. Full of flavour so rich yet light. Deaserts, I had coconut pancake - but sticky rice, hence gluten free - thing, the first on the menu. Not bad. It's all about coconut and bits of chocolate mousse. Food, becos it's not really for vegan... So 3.5/5 Service is great. Mr Tunggul helped a lot to enjoy the dinner. 4/5 Indoor can be freezing cold... So bear in mind for that. Definitely not a bad place to hangout, and if you want to enjoy fine Indonesian cuisine, HIGHLY recommended.

Pairing wine with Indonesian food can be a delightful surprise when done right, and my recent experience proved just that. With the cuisine’s rich spices, bold flavors, and layered heat, it might seem like a challenge but the thoughtful pairings at our dinner elevated every dish. We started with gado-gado, a refreshing salad with peanut sauce, which was beautifully complemented by a chilled Gewürztraminer. The wine’s floral aroma and slight sweetness balanced the nutty sauce and subtle heat, enhancing the freshness of the dish. Next came Ayam Bakar Bom Banjarmasin, a slow roasted chicken packed with spices. A medium-bodied Pinot Noir was paired with this, and it worked wonderfully the wine’s earthy notes and soft tannins didn’t compete with the dish, but rather supported its complex flavors. The highlight of the evening was Rendang, the iconic West Sumatran beef dish. Rich, spicy, and deeply savory, it was paired with a bold Syrah. The wine’s peppery character and dark fruit notes brought out the depth of the rendang and matched its intensity without overwhelming the palate. Throughout the meal, the pairings felt intentional and well balanced. The staff’s Agrian Sommeliers knowledge of both the wine list and Indonesian flavor profiles was impressive they made the entire experience approachable, educational, and thoroughly enjoyable. This experience proved that with the right guidance, wine and Indonesian food can be a match made in culinary heaven.
