One of the best meals I've had in Asia over the past year (I'm from the UK, based in Singapore, and travel to Bali to surf on a monthly basis).
From a Indonesian perspective this restaurant is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination; however, on the global scale it's a real bargain. Be in not doubt, this place can and should be measured up against the worlds better restaurants. It would rate among the better restaurants in London, Bangkok, Singapore or Hong Kong. The restaurant has found a tone and sticks with it - high-end boutique Asian fusion (sounds like a bunch of words, but go eat here - it will make sense).
Global food with a local flair, along with more traditional local dishes (all with a refined twist). The flavors, textures and balance of the dishes we had were all superb and well considered.
The staff are trained to a very very high standard and were extremely personable - some of the best service I've had in Asia (possibly they best). The chef wanders the tables explaining dishes and ensuring everything is to his guests' liking - I've not seen this too often in Asia.
If you have the cash (budget about 300,000 - 800,000 without wine for 3 courses), then this place is great.
Wine is about 120,000-150,000 a glass. Bottles vary. None of the usual big hitting suspects; however this fits with the restaurant. A slug of classed growth Bordeaux would not doubt look out of place here. In effect, the wines on the reasonably short list had a place there and appeared well chosen.
I only post reviews if an establishment is really commendable, or, rarely, if the establishment has been actively rude and/or negligent in some way. This place firmly falls in the...
Read moreCome here for the view and you will not be disappointed. We saw many sea view restaurants during our stay in Uluwatu but this view takes the cake. The food aims high but just falls short compared to some of the other restaurants in its specific niche. We had four of the small plates: the white fish tartar, the pickled sardines, the panko squid and the homemade spring rolls. Out of the four, only the tartar hit home for us, which was nice and fresh and well balanced. The spring rolls were nice but not particularly memorable, which is what you expect at this level. The sardines were well made though a tiny tad too acidic and needed balancing. The squid was the biggest let down for us, as it didn't have a lot of flavour and honestly resembled something one might get at an ambitious pub somewhere. However the squid was well cooked so props for that. Our verdict: the food here is good but if you want to be wowed, come...
Read moreBeautiful decor with the arched roof, and spacious but private due to the little number of tables. Shared some starters and we each had a main. Main courses are quite small in size. When we called a cab from the hotel we were told it's fixed price of 100k to a short distance away (15 mins ride) even though we came in a metered taxi for 50k from Alila Uluwatu. Eventually the driver reduced to 70k. We didn't care about the price but we didn't like how they gang up together to lie to us especially when it's a reputable place which explains the lack of stars for this review. If Alila could get a metered taxi, I'm sure this...
