Market Lane was by our hotel and the menu looked good, so we decided to check it out one night for dinner. It was a Tuesday, just after 7 and it was packed inside. Luckily, there was an outside table for the three of us, and they were able to accommodate a stroller.
For drinks, I was looking forward to a Guinness, but they didn't have. So instead, I had the Angel stout, which was very smooth. It was a bit darker and a little more bitter than Guinness, but still good. For food, we had:
-Chicken liver pâté, spiced plum chutney with sourdough toast - not sure if I really loved this one but the sourdough toast was good Glenbeigh mussels steamed in white wine, cream, celery and herbs with crusty baguette - I don't normally like anything with celery but I didn't taste it here, so it was fine. I liked the mussels. This kind was small, which I prefer to the giant ones found in the U.S. -Pan roast Ballycotton monkfish, garlic ratte potatoes, roast pepper purée, lemon salted green beans, smoked pancetta and almond crumb - the fish was cooked perfectly and tasted fresh, but the green beans could have used a bit more cooking time -Sirloin Steak (10oz) - my husband got this one since he wanted to try the beef in Ireland, and it didn't disappoint. Their steaks are served with mushrooms, house chips, shallots and choice of: peppercorn and brandy cream, whipped garlic butter or roasted pepper chimichurri. He picked the peppercorn and brandy, which was nice
I really liked that they had a kids' menu and that there were no chicken tenders or pizza to be found on there. Instead, there were dishes like shepherd's pie, pasta Bolognese, and roasted chicken breast. They even had a baby bowl, which we ended up ordering for my 8-month old. It was a huge bowl of mashed potatoes, finely shredded chicken, with tiny bits of soft carrots. She loved it! It also came with a side of gravy, but we used that for ourselves. It tasted similar to the peppercorn and brandy cream that came with the steak. I really appreciated this menu item because I never really see baby food on restaurant menus, and this allowed her to be a part of our...
Read moreMy favourite restaurant in Cork for a taste of Irish and Mediterranean food. The staff is by far the nicest one in town, they are always ready to offer you the best service and great recommendations. The management here is absolutely brilliant, always super welcoming and accommodating. I always feel like home when I come. Food is devine! I love how they always update their menu every once in a while, so among their core dishes such as fish and chips, sandwiches, or soups, you can find new interesting and appealing dishes. I was obsessed for years with their buttersquash and lentil baked lasagne with roasted almonds. However, that dish is not on their menu anymore. But don't worry, their new additions are exquisite, particularly their dal valda lentil cakes with cashew yoghurt, their pumpkin and cauliflower gnocchis, their salad with crispy tofu, and the house flatbread with chickpea falafel. Their cauliflower wings are the best ones in Cork, although they didn't have them on the menu the last time I was there. I really hope their chefs bring them back please, they are delicious!!!! Soups are always very tasty, and you can ask them for dairy free options as well as gluten and vegan menu. The selection of wines is great, and they are unbelievable when it comes to coctels. In a nutshell, the perfect restaurant for your casual lunch to your...
Read moreMy experience here can only be described as mixed. There were three starters ordered and a portion of crispy torn chicken which turned out to be the best starter of the night. The bacon was beautiful however the portion was miserable. There were two mussels ordered and both were tiny with a couple of the shells being broken so they were indelible. The ham was the best dish of the night. The meat was tender and delicious. I got the fillet steak while another person got a fillet steak and both came well below the expected standard. Only mushrooms and one or two pieces of onions were served. The meat was juicy and well cooked but the lack of sides was evident as we were still hungry after our meal. The last meal ordered for main course was the lentil cakes which tipped us over. The lentil cakes were burnt which the CHEF TRIED TO HIDE by flipping the burnt side over (see photo). We were shocked and appalled by this unprofessional behaviour. We HAD to send the dish back and quickly came an under cooked lentil cakes. Don't know if I will be back here and I certainly don't think I would be recommending the...
