Very short 2 night stay on a Voucher Offer. 1 Day B&B, with 1 Night Dinner & Wine (available either night, but requires booking)
We had the Dinner & Wine the 1st night - Steaks were €5 over the Meal & Wine offer, but were Very Well Worth it! Delicious and cooked to perfection for myself - Medium Rare, and for Josie -Well Done ! Excellent food, attentive Service - without someone popping over every 5mins made for a very relaxed atmosphere. After dinner we went to the Bar which was large, but had nooks for quiet conversation. The Hotel itself has a quiet kind of feel, which makes a nice change. Maybe it was a lack of young'uns, or the time of the week, but it just made the "Homely" atmosphere more - well "Homely" I suppose. There were armchairs and sofas round open fires in the Foyer area and the idea of sitting in front of them with a nice drink, or even tea and a good book didn't seem strange - or even unusual ! There were quite a number of younger staff and the usual smattering of foreign accents, but as the Sligo Southern is part of the Brian McAniff Hotels Group that's to be expected in almost all Hotels now. And it's very nice to see and hear young European peoples various accents, as I believe it makes Short-Stay breaks seem a little more exotic than just a variety on the Irish accent.
Day Two broke as overcast as most of Day One had been, so that called for a latish Breakfast - Proper Irish, with Sausages, Bacon, Eggs and Black and White Pudding (and No, I don't know why a 'blood sausage' Europe-wide is a called a "Pudding" in Ireland!) And we're back - Cereals, Freshly brewed Tea/Coffee and Toast and for the Healthy option Scrambled Eggs and a good choice of Fruit drinks and Fruits and a range of 'sweet' bread - a lá Ménu European - or Sweet, Cinnamony and Apple Strudel types of "wee baps", as Nordy's would call them !
So Overall a Nice, unpretentious Hotel, with the Appearance of being Smaller than it Actually is. Rooms where reasonably sized - though the TVs in our room was a bit on the small side. Good cupboard space and Tea/coffee makings - though if you're wise you'll nip down for a wee jug of Fresh milk instead of those wee UHT things that usually spill on opening! Rooms -and everywhere else - were clean and well enough equipped for a couple of days. Highpoint was great bathroom for me - as a Disabled person who usually needs a bath-stool and help, being able to just walk in, have a good strong bar to hold onto and generally sort myself out was a Very Big thing ! Conclusion: Sligo Southern is easy to find, has good Free Hotel Parking - but Very Poor Wheelchair Access, as it's on the opposite side of the Building from the Car Park ! From Check-in until leaving, the Staff were as nice and friendly as could be. The Hotel was very pleasant and fairly quiet (we were at the front looking out to the Main Road) Rooms were of a decent size - bed was huge! Bathroom had a great Walk-in shower. Everything was Clean, neat and tidy. The Food was excellent and Served in what we would consider as Very adequate portion sizes - compared to some Restaurants and Hotels who have a Tendency in this country, to Over-fill Large plates. We had Breakfast and Dinner at the Hotel as it wasn't the weather for looking elsewhere! Dinners were very nice, with good portion sizes. Breakfasts were "Buffet" style with plenty of everything.
Addendum: Josie has reminded me of Her favourite activity whilst holidaying - swimming! And apparently the Sligo Southern has both good Gym facilities and a lovely underused Swimming pool ! Even though the Gym/Fitness Suite and Pool are open to the Public - through Membership of the Gym - and Hotel...

(We booked a double Room) In your provided discription upon reviewing this hotel this is what you have advertised.
"the hotel which was originally built in 1928. Our bedrooms have been refurbished to a very high standard. The beds boast pocket strung quilted mattresses, with crisp white duvets and fluffy pillows, perfect after a long day exploring what Sligo has to offer."
What we actually received was an extremely dated hotel. Small room, stains on the carpet. Very old curtains and a broken window. Upon arriving and exiting the lift to the third floor their was a ladder hanging down blocking our path and a food tray directly to the right. This was a tripping hazard of which my girlfriend did trip over. What makes this worse is their was cleaners present and completely ignored this tripping hazard.
Prior to arrival, we booked a dinner reservation. For 8pm, but we where a little hungry and required a lunch. We had the lunch in the bar and while we where their also had a look at the dinner menu. This is our first time seeing the dinner menu as it's not displayed on the website. Only the bar menu is provided. We where very underwhelmed by the bar food. Especially for the price and for the quality everything tasted like it was cooked from frozen. Even the chips. Like how hard is it to prepare fresh chips.
We went down to the restaurant, prior to canceling our reservation for the night. Just to have a look see. Of which can only be compared to a school cafeteria (break area) for someone seeking romance this is not the place to be. We seeked the cancelation immediately after viewing this restaurant. To which we where told their is a 20 euro cancelation fee. I was already aware of this fee prior to booking the table. But I expected quality. Quality was not on the table. The receptionist refused to wave the fee and said it's out of her hands. Nothing she could do. I explained our situation upon seeing the menu as it doesn't Carter for us.
Additional warning. To the elderly and unpaitant. The lift is extremely slow of which their is only one. It stops at every floor and we honestly gave up. Their is no disability access for the elderly or disabled and luggage is a hard pull.
I had a family member stay here prior a number of years back. They stayed at the rear of the hotel. Which over looks the trian station. They where unable to sleep. But I can promise you the front is no better with the noise of the street.
Thankfully we are only staying one night. We will be gone early in the morning and to never return. The hotel should close the doors and call it a day. Warning to all visitors stay clear.
Had it not been paid for in advance we would have walked out and make...
Read moreWe stayed at this hotel last weekend with our 2 young children. A parent is always anxious when staying at any hotel with young kids, but we were all made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. |We drove to the hotel which has its own parking directly beside it but it is also next door to the train and bus stations! What more could u ask for in terms of transport accessibility. (There is a steps up to reception but an external wheelchair lift right beside it).||Our children were excited to go straight to the pool, which is relatively small but more than big enough to accommodate plenty of people. There is a regular pool and attached children's pool, which was ideal for our needs. The leisure centre staff provide towels and the changing facilities had lockers, 2 very good showers and 2 private changing rooms. On all 3 of our visits to the swimming pool (Fri, Sat and Sun) the various leisure staff provided our kids with pool toys and floats, which they loved. ||Gym, sauna and steam room facilities are also available which we didn't use but the gym is visible through the leisure centre lobby and it looks small but good. ||Our room (538) had a double bed and 2 single beds, a big bathroom with shower and bath, towel heater which was ideal for drying our swimming togs and also shampoo and shower gel provided. We also discovered that the couch in our room folded out into a double bed also! Which may suit some families more.||The room itself had an ironing board, iron, fan, tea, and coffee making facilities, TV, desk area, wardrobe, etc ||Breakfast on both mornings was fantastic with a great range of hot and cold options (self service) and we also ate in the bar on one night, which was enjoyable. ||We only ordered drinks from room service but they came very quickly and the staff were so polite and friendly like all of the staff in the hotel, especially at breakfast and reception, they cannot do enough to help you! ||It's a short drive for those in cars to Glancar waterfall as well as the Devil's Chimney, and we also drove to Strandhill beach, which is a beautiful location also. ||The decor of the hotel is dated but the hotel is so clean that this only adds to the character in my opinion. The hotel is also undergoing redecoration too. ||Only one small negative which is the power of the shower in our room wasn't amazing, however we could shower in the leisure facilities if needed and also use the bath in our room too. ||Thank you to everyone in Sligo Southern Hotel for a fantastic family weekend away and we will most...
