BEWARE CELIACS
I was delighted to have located another gluten free spot in Sligo. I had an amazing meal Tuesday. Full fry Gluten free. Nice Manager fella served me & emphasised GF when taking the order to be fair to him. My partner and I had received horrendous news the day before so this was a nice treat.
2 days later came back. Young blonde waitress taking orders. Friendly to lady in front of me. I didn’t even get a greeting. I asked for the same thing GF Fry & Latte. Grand. Meal comes. Had my toast, tomato and copped that there was pudding in it. Went down to confirm GF and she claimed I didn’t order GF…. ? A pregnant celiac… If she hadn’t been so ignorant to me she would have heard right. I had ate glutened bread to my horror! I am 22 weeks pregnant. I miscarried last year after accidental glutening in a Barcelona restaurant due to language barrier but where’s the excuse here? I was infuriated by the carelessness. I demanded my refund. Spoke to the Manager who seemed sound and said would speak to her.
It takes very little to show respect and a listening ear to a Customer. The place was dead as it was so early in the morning so there’s no excuse for her not paying attention to me. We all have crap in our lives and I don’t know what was going on for her personally but when serving food you HAVE to be mindful.
Recommendation: Waiting staff should confirm when order put in if ‘Regular or Gluten Free’.
I personally will definitely not be back until post-baby as I’m petrified of eating out again now inc of any damage caused to my daughter. It sucks that the actions of others can have some detrimental effects. I feel horrific now symptoms-wise, I am facing into 32 hours work the next 3 days and I’m also highly concerned about my baby when this is already a high-risk pregnancy. It’s not good enough. The refund went straight into the pharmacy full amount trying to find a remedy but nothing helps when you are actually Celiac.
Gorgeous spot. Nice food when served actually gluten free- just PLEASE repeat it 10 times if you have to that you are Celiac/Gluten intolerant. Don’t make the same mistake I did in trusting that my Server was paying...
Read moreWent for coffee here this morning.
Lyons cafe is situated on the top floor of the Henry Lyons department store. Its ye olde world. I think the place has operated as a department store business on the current site for over 150 years.
The coffee shop on the top floor captures much of that. High ceilings, drop down lights, wooden floors, old style furniture.
The atmosphere in the background is of that of an old coffee house with background music dominated by the sounds of the coffee machine and food service (maybe it was where I was sitting but I think it added to the experience).
The place feels very current though. The service area seemed exceptionally clean, the menu is modern. There were cakes and scones that looked the business on my way up to order.
My order for coffee was taken at the till and it was dropped down to me promptly which was nice rather than waiting around.
There were papers on the benches to read. I found it a cool place to chill with a coffee reading the morning paper.
One drawback for me, though was the coffee itself, although the blend was nice - I found the milk to be a bit too hot (having worked as a barista overseas where the trend is towards a lower temperature milk).
Summary: Great place to go for morning coffee or lunch. Think it captures the best of that area of the town very well. Traditional is in roots, yet modern and progressive in...
Read moreMy second time and I will start by saying the food is worth giving it a go. My first time I had a Greek burger, mash and veg that was lovely. This time was a breakfast sandwich that was also plenty filling and tasty.
I've also gotten their bread (same as the bap was on) downstairs in the bakeshop and it's definitely welcome at home any time. I didn't try any of the tarts and pastries I have pictured here but based on the meals/bread I have had, I'd say you won't be disappointed in taste.
The service, however, is hit and miss. I've been in the bakery and the two young ladies were upbeat, friendly and patient as I figured out what I wanted on a first visit. I've been other occasions and observed with myself and others the service seems a bit curt/short based on if they know the customer or not.
As well, upstairs, I had a wonderful experience with the gentleman who served me the Greek plate but felt almost like an intrusion getting my breakfast. Each question was a bit impatiently answered and the breakfast board pointed at before she walked away.
Not the most welcoming experiences - which is surprising given the general kindness I've felt since moving to Sligo.
