Avoid the duck, bring a stopwatch
I have wanted to try Hang Dai for some time now so decided to give it a whirl. Website indicates restaurant is open 1-10pm on Saturdays. This is not the case. We booked a table for 5pm, informed it was a 90min booking, no problem for us. Pre-ordered the duck for 2.
Arrived about 15mins before hand to try a cocktail as I heard great things, not possible. We were then given multiple updates on how we only had 90mins and how much time we had left throughout our visit, which turned us off completely, in fact we left early as a result, perhaps the intention.
Advised to order just one or two starters as the main is supposedly large. (Again not sure if this was a get in get out recommendation)
Ordered the cheeseburger spring roll and prawn toasts with yuzu as read the reviews. Spring roll was spot on, really does taste like a cheeseburger, could have eaten 5 of them easily. Prawn Toasts was nice, but similar to any other really, perhaps a little lighter.
Duck comes as sliced breast, some skin, one leg, one half a head with pancakes, hoisin and a side of noodles with (I was informed) duck leg meat chopped through (perhaps it was the wing?) Duck breast cooked perfectly and it was nice, but honestly tasted like any shredded duck with pancakes...no wow factor, no real difference. It's for two but it wasn't that large really, I could have eaten the entire thing. We ordered four cocktails, which we drank quite quickly, time was ticking!! which were hit and miss, Satay Away was too overpowered by the seasonings for my taste, we were asked if we wanted a "last cocktail" as we had to leave shortly....at 12 Euro a pop with the intimation of knock it back we didnt bother.
If we go back we would not want the time pressure, so if you have a specific time to turn around it's something to note. I appreciate they have to manage seats but too mentioned too many times. I would recommend you seek a booth, or upstairs area, seats at the counter are too tight in my opinion and I would only use it to have a few snacks and a cocktail. We went with the duck based on reviews, if you have had duck pancakes before then skip it, I would try some of their other dishes, probably better displays the skills...
Read moreAmazing atmosphere and the best food revelation ever. I came here with my partner to have a nice dinner for my birthday, I have always been curious about this place but never got the chance to visit. The place is really stunning, the low lighting creates a warm atmosphere and the design is really traditional and futuristic at the same time. The whole menu looked very interesting and we couldn't really decide, so we split the tasting menu and a very nice bottle of wine. Best choice ever to try a bit of everything. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful and make you feel very comfortable. All the food was handled impeccably (oh my god, the tenderness of the meat!) and shows the love and creativity they have in preparing the meals.
The duck croquettes was the most powerful and unexpected eating experience I have ever had. First bite, enlightenment, real tears that I couldn't stop. The taste was exactly the same as my grandmother's homemade croquettes, which were her favourite and long missed starter at all of our family dinners. It came as a shock to me, which is crazy because we're Italian and the ingredients aren't even exactly the same, but after almost 10 years I made peace with the idea that I would never eat those croquettes again in my life, and finding them in a Chinese restaurant in Dublin for my birthday was the greatest gift ever. I explained this to the staff to apologise for my reaction and not only did the chef offer me an extra portion free of charge but they also brought me a delicious biscuit ice cream with a candle at the end of the meal.
I just wanted to thank you again for the whole experience, which would have been great even without this Proust's Madeleine. I'm really grateful for all the passion and love you put into your work, and I'm honestly sorry I couldn't afford a bigger tip, because you guys really deserve it. Needless to say, I'll recommend this place to everyone I know and we'll be back as soon as possible to try the rest of the food we didn't get a chance to try, and to get that warm feeling of home whenever I need...
Read moreWent here with a group of 4 for NYE. Supposed to be 6 but Covid hit 2 of the party. NYE is such a mixed bag and this ended up being a great choice. Would definitely go back on a regular night as well. Firstly, staff were excellent. I initially talked to one of the staff in November and she was super friendly and told us that we were eating late at 9:00 PM that we could have then table for the night. A few days before another staff called to confirm our reservation and to see if we wanted to pre-order the duck (we did, and it was excellent). Super nice as well. On NYE I called to change from 6 to 4 and there was no problem. When we arrived, the staff were super friendly (great genuine welcome from the host). Waiter and other servers throughout the night were excellent. I got the impression that this is a good place to work as everybody was pretty chill and worked well together. The food was excellent. Normally don’t eat a lot of Chinese (more of a Thai and sushi person). However, everything was excellent. The 2 standout dishes were the Tuna Tataki and the duck (we only ordered a half duck and wished we had ordered a full one). The deserts were very old school but perfect for an after dinner treat. The drinks / cocktails were excellent and well-priced. What I loved was the restaurant just went with their regular menu for NYE. No special menu for NYE at €100+ like other venues. The space is super cool as well. Very different. Almost feels like you are kind of on a bus or a restaurant in the far east (you need to look at pix). Make sure you are on then ground floor as the people watching is great. Lastly the place became clubby after dinner with people dancing. The music was excellent. Great re-mixes. I believe it is like this most weekends. Overall super happy we were...
