The starter was rather unremarkable. The soda bread served with the crab claw became especially dry after being pan-fried. The pairing of red cabbage with chilli oil didn’t work—the dish lacked a strong foundational flavour, and the addition of peanut chilli oil only heightened the bitterness of the cabbage, resulting in a muddled and incoherent taste. The main course, however, was a pleasant surprise. The steak, in particular, was rich, juicy, and full of flavour—I would return just for that dish. The lamb was exceptionally tender with a lovely hint of char from the grill. As always, the dessert was consistently excellent.

Hidden gem! The food is local and outstanding! The cheese plate starter has a great assortment of local cheeses paired really well with jelly and honey. The steak and lamb entrees were top notch! The cheesy bread, spuds and cabbage were delicious accompaniments. The chocolate tort at the end with a heavy cream and cherries was so good. Only issue was the table that wobbled. Highly recommend this restaurant!

The Universal had came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. The food was amazing, everything melted in our mouths. We had the steak, lamb, risotto, prawns and bone marrow, honestly, some of the best food we’ve ever had. The staff were extremely friendly and really nice, they created a really cool vibe, and the espresso martinis were also a big hit. We will definitely be back.

Had dinner here with some friends the last weekend of October.

Very quick and easy to book a table. Very cosy with a great atmosphere and good music played low enough where you could converse with no difficulty hearing others. All staff were very welcoming and friendly.

I ordered the lemon sole and a bowl of garlic potatoes + deep fried pickles with garlic aioli sauce.

The lemon sole was delicious and the meat slid right off the bone, the garlic potatoes were cooked to perfection and tasted great while the deep fried pickles combined with the aioli sauce was a brilliant combination.

I highly recommended this Gastropub to anyone in living Galway or there...

Experience was okay, the atmosphere wasn't anything special but the service was good. I went back in August and what made me want to leave a review (I don't usually) was just how small the portions were especially at their price. I remember eating my remaining food whilst others at the table were watching and clearly still hungry. I will never understand why you order the sides separate to the main, the main is not enough on its own. I think pictures on Google maps can provide a reference. Albeit, what was...
