The Field Bar & Restaurant in Kilkenny is an authentic Irish pub experience that combines a lively atmosphere, friendly service, and a touch of history. Located on High Street near the heart of the city, this pub has roots dating back to the early 1600s, and it still retains that traditional charm with its warm wooden interiors, historic photos, and sports memorabilia lining the walls. From the moment you walk in, you feel the energy of the place, whether it’s the buzz of conversation or the strains of live music drifting through the room. Music is a huge part of The Field’s appeal—most evenings feature live performances ranging from traditional Irish tunes to popular covers, creating an electric yet welcoming vibe. Guests often mention that these sessions turn into singalongs as the night goes on, adding to the sense of community. If you’re visiting for the drinks, you won’t be disappointed. The Guinness here is poured perfectly, as you’d expect in Kilkenny, and the whiskey selection is impressive, with plenty of Irish options and classic cocktails like Jameson and Ginger Ale prepared with care. The bartenders are a highlight; they’re not only fast and efficient but also genuinely friendly, often taking the time to chat with customers and offer recommendations, whether it’s about what to drink or where else to visit in the city. When it comes to food, reviews are mixed. Some guests have enjoyed hearty Irish fare such as bacon and mash, while others have noted that food service can be inconsistent, with certain nights focusing more on the bar and music. If a meal is important to you, it’s best to call ahead to confirm whether the kitchen is open. The atmosphere changes as the evening progresses. Early on, it’s a great spot for a relaxed pint, a conversation with locals, or a quiet listen to the start of a music session. Later in the night, the energy ramps up considerably, with a full house, laughter, and lively groups crowding the floor. For some, this is the essence of a true Irish night out; for others, it can feel a bit rowdy, so timing your visit matters if you prefer a calmer experience. One of the most endearing qualities of The Field is its sense of character. You’re not just in a generic pub—you’re in a place that feels deeply tied to Kilkenny’s culture and history, from the décor celebrating local hurling heroes to the friendly chatter of patrons who seem to treat everyone like an old friend. Whether you’re a tourist looking for a real Irish pub experience or a local out for a good time, The Field delivers with its winning combination of history, music, and hospitality. If you want a perfect pint, toe-tapping tunes, and a chance to soak up Kilkenny’s spirit, this is the place to go. Just arrive early if you want a seat—and be ready to stay late if the...
Read moreWe stumbled upon this cozy and friendly bar our first night in Ireland. We are American and were looking for a place to watch the American Football game. This bar had it on the TV towards the back. Although I can't speak to the food we did have some wonderful drinks and entertainment. We ordered a smith, a Guiness and plenty of Jameson gingers. All the drinks were great, but what made the experience was the live entertainment and the patrons of this bar. The patrons seemed to consist of many regulars or friends of the regulars. We met Charlie the bartender who was so kind to everyone including us. He took the time to talk to me about our trip and showed sympathy about the current political climate in the US. We also met other travelers and now have new friends. I recommend this bar if you are passing through Kilkenny and I hope to go...
Read moreI work 2 mins up the road, decided to go here on my lunch break because I saw an All Day Breakfast sign outside, waited over 40mins for the food to come, the people sat behind me got their food well before me even though I had ordered before them, the food eventually came no explanation no apology. The butter for the toast was turned to liquid from sitting on the hot plate & was missing mushrooms. When I went to pay the bill the girl behind the bar never asked was everything ok even though I had overheard her earlier with the waitress asking where my food was and the waitress saying they missed it, obviously she didn’t want to confront the issue. I understand mistakes happen but the way in which the staff handled it was appalling. Won’t...
