A friend recommended this spot, and I’m glad they did—places like this don’t usually show up in top-ten lists, but they should. Tucked down a quiet side street in Florence, Enoteca Alla Sosta Dei Papi offers the kind of relaxed, confident atmosphere that only comes from doing things right for a long time.

The selection is excellent. A wide range of wines by the glass—nothing overpriced, nothing pretentious. You can trust the staff to steer you in the right direction, whether you know your grapes or just want something that tastes good. Hands down the best deal we’ve had on vacation in Italy. The place is packed when most other shops, bars, and restaurants are quiet, which points to this being a very popular spot for the locals. My wife and I bought a bottle of house red, house white and two glasses of red (that were filled almost to the brim) for €13. Not to mention a small plate of snacks, which were great after walking around all day.

You can either bring your own bottle (water bottle, wine bottle, or probably any other bottle with a lid) and they will refill out of the stills(?) or just grab you a bottle of whatever you want.

The time we spent here is my fondest memory of visiting Firenze with my fiance. We visited in early September. The owners are wonderful; friendly, passionate about what they do, and very accommodating of my clumsy attempt at Italian! I asked for their recommendation of their favourite white and red wine, both were delicious. Falanghina and Montalcino. We ordered the Cocclio and it was one of the best things we ate in Italy.
