Il Fabbro — Restaurant in Genoa

I had dinner at Il Fabbro yesterday evening. Essentially, I loved everything about it: if I ever open a restaurant, I would follow the same philosophy. I really appreciated the food: flavors and textures are combined in a good and interesting way, yet without being too complex or needing to be too fancy. I would recommend to ask the waiters to explain the menu to you (our waiter spoke French and also a bit of English), as it is only on a blackboard and may result inunderselling their plates. In addition to speaking multiple languages, waiters were really friendly and nice, and also service was quite quick. Atmosphere is minimal, simple and familiar, which I appreciate, so do not expect fancy decorations. In summary: good food and service with no unnecessary things around it, which I think is the essence of a traditional trattoria in Genova. Excellent food in Genova. Very affordable with great food. The walk to the restaurant is perilous 😅, you have to pass alleyways with many young man hanging out and your mind playing tricks thinking that this will be a pretty scary or interesting experience. But once you enter the place you find warmth and the smell of good dinner waiting for you. Appetizers are excellent, have the burrata with very light but flavorful stewed tomatoes and bread. Leider enttäuschend, wir kommen nicht wieder!!

Wir kamen an einem Freitagabend spontan vorbei und waren zunächst froh, überhaupt noch einen Tisch zu bekommen, draußen vor der Kirche war leider alles belegt, also nahmen wir im Innenraum Platz. Ohne Menükarte wurden uns die Gerichte auf einer großen Kreidetafel gezeigt, was erstmal ganz charmant wirkte.

Wir entschieden uns für ein antipasto, drei Primi, ein Secondo und eine Hauptspeise, dazu eine Flasche Rotwein. Kaum hatten wir das Brot angerührt und das Wasser geöffnet, wurden uns plötzlich schon die ersten Teller serviert, die Geschwindigkeit war fast schon verdächtig hoch. Leider bestätigte sich unser mulmiges Gefühl schnell: Das Essen war zwar warm, aber wirklich enttäuschend. Der Fisch war extrem gummiartig!!

Nach einer langen Wartezeit fragten wir schließlich nach unserem Secondo. Auch hier war die Enttäuschung groß: Kleine Fischstücke mit Kartoffeln, voller Gräten –und das ohne jeglichen Hinweis vom Personal. Während wir versuchten, auch diesen Gang hinter uns zu bringen, wurden uns plötzlich noch zwei weitere Teller serviert, die wir gar nicht bestellt hatten. Das sorgte für zusätzliche Verwirrung.

Alles in allem war der Besuch leider eine herbe Enttäuschung. Die Qualität der Speisen war mangelhaft, der Service zwar schnell, aber unkoordiniert, und wir verließen das Lokal mit dem festen Vorsatz, nicht...
