What a place! A thousand years of culinary history — I honestly don’t even know where to begin.
We walked into this amazing, family-run restaurant, and it felt like stepping into another world. Everything is homemade, deeply rooted in tradition, yet served with a level of elegance and care that rivals fine dining. It’s strange, but in the best way possible.
Picture this: jazz playing softly in the background, and you’re sitting inside a natural cave that stays cool without any air conditioning — it’s atmospheric, cozy, and just feels right.
When I say “homemade,” I mean literally everything — from 100% pure olive oil to the bread, wine, and even the vinegar. They make it all there. And if you have allergies or dislike certain ingredients? No problem. Nothing is pre-cooked; they prepare everything fresh to order, so they can adjust anything to your preference on the spot.
We asked for something a bit special, just the two of us, and the owner — who was incredibly warm and welcoming — simply said: “I’ll bring you a little bit of everything.”
My GOD.
By the time we got to our 10th antipasto plate, followed by the first and second courses, we had no room left! 😂 They even packed us a full dish to take home because we couldn’t finish it — and let me tell you, dinner at home that night was just as mind-blowing.
And the price? Unbelievable. The entire experience, including half a liter of wine, cost us just $100. Honestly, you could be full with just one plate for $30 or less.

Only 12min (750m) away from the Cathedral and the experience is simply AMAZING.
Work as a tour leader around the world, so I've tried quite a few restaurants. We were 28 people so ... This could be the equivalent to 28 reviews in one.
AWESOME food, lovely calm atmosphere and excellent service. The whole family did EVERYTHING to make us happy.
All in all ... A lovely experience that wrapped up our day in Matera, on a really nice way.
The best restaurant in our 8 day tour (lunch and dinner) so 16 different places ...
Try it folks. You won't regret.
I'll be back soon guys !! I promise 🙏🏼
12 months later I came back to Gianfranco and Olga, and the treatment, service and food were even better. This is DEFINITELY the place to try when you are in Matera, instead of having lunch in the old part. PRICES & QUALITY are something supreme. You will definitely be happy to choose this place to have a WONDERFUL Italian lunch.
Thanks a million Gianfranco and Olga, you are...

It was the worst place we had eaten in Italy so far. The appetisers were awful, and the ordered mushrooms on mashed potatoes were tasteless and almost cold. The texture and taste of the mushrooms were horrible, the mashed potatoes were bland, and the whole appetiser was drowning in olive oil, which seemed very unfitting. The polpette were without texture and tasteless. The orecchiette with sausages in tomato sauce was tasteless. The medaglioni were cold and flavourless. The atmosphere was cold; we sat uncomfortably, and on the walls stood the served products, which gave us the feeling that we were sitting in some "showroom". In conclusion, the food was horrible; the atmosphere wasn't any better. We can't understand the other good reviews. Likely, some people (if they exist) have no tasting nerves. In my many trips to Italy, I never had such a disappointing...
