The food at this restaurant was simply not fresh, not good. I followed our waiter’s suggestion and ordered veal Milanese instead of one of more intriguing menu choices. It arrived at the table on a big plate with arugula tucked under the veal, but its tired look and its tired taste could not be hidden. Potatoes warmed up for the nth time were mushy. The veal itself tasted funky, and not in a positive way. It was salty, but that could be very subjective and perhaps should not count against it. On the objective note: it tasted as if it came from a pan running oil for a third day in some third rate joint. Our duck appetizer was delicious and perhaps this should mitigate the score. However, when a restaurant with such elegant (if not pretentious) setting and such elegant (if not pretentious) service entices with something good only to then commit a culinary murder, the sentence must be life without parole (and that is only if you don’t believe in a death penalty). The Veal Cotoletta Milanese at the Old Italian Eatery was a true work of art, golden in color with a soft, crispy exterior. Each bite was perfectly balanced and deeply satisfying. Paired with plenty of fresh lemon, this dish allowed us to taste the best of traditional Milanese cuisine.
