Naples | Highly Recommending a Century-Old Café ☕

The Café Gambrinus takes its name from the mythical King Gambrinus of Flanders, who is considered the patron saint of beer. Founded in 1860, the café is located on the ground floor of the historic Palazzo della Prefettura, the seat of the provincial government. It has hosted many celebrities, artists, royals, popes, heads of state and celebrities. Gabriele D'Annunzio found the inspiration for his A'vucchella, set to music by Tosti. It was also a meeting place for artists and intellectuals such as Ernest Hemingway and Sigmund Freud. The rooms of Gran Caffè Gambrinus have been the setting for several films and TV series: The Three-Legged Fox (2002), Donne ordini (2007), The Unbroken Chaos (2009), The Illegitimate Son of Pizzofalcone, Inspector Ricciardi (2021), etc. The price difference between dine-in and take-out is several times, but if you come all the way here, dine-in is a must, and the price is not a big deal. The interior is luxurious and upscale, the atmosphere is luxurious and refined, and many works of art are on display. We were lucky to encounter a knowledgeable, enthusiastic, fast-paced and experienced host in such a famous environment. The exquisite menu is rich in content and also introduces the history of the restaurant. The delicious dishes served are indeed delicious. From Neapolitan classics such as Sfogliatella and Babà, to exquisite cakes and carefully prepared coffee, every bite represents a journey through the authentic flavors of the Neapolitan tradition. We started with a refreshing glass of sparkling water to cleanse our palates, then had three coffees: the ladies chose the Cappuccino alla Melange, sprinkled with cocoa powder for a mocha-like flavor. The men chose the unique Gambrinus coffee. Created by the historic owner Gennaro Ponziani, this rich coffee contains cocoa, sugar and cream, which are gently heated to blend perfectly. Its small cup holds a rich flavor and has a beautiful cocoa coating on the rim, perfect for sipping.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Our day trip in Naples began with a hearty breakfast at one of the city’s oldest and most beloved cafes, Gran Caffè Gambrinus. This historic gem has been serving up delicious pastries, coffee, and charm since 1860. Walking in feels like stepping back in time, with its elegant Belle Époque decor and history as a meeting spot for writers and artists. It’s no wonder famous names like Oscar Wilde and Gandhi once enjoyed a coffee here. We started with a refreshing Granita di Limone to cleanse our palates, followed by a trio of coffees: the Cappuccino alla Melange, with a cocoa dusting that gives it a mocha-like taste (a favorite of our child), a classic Cappuccino for my wife, and my personal choice—the unique Caffè Gegè. Created by the historic owner Gennaro Ponziani, this rich coffee features cocoa, sugar, and cream, heated gently for a perfect blend. Its small cup packs a powerful flavor, with a beautiful cocoa coating on the rim, making it perfect for savoring. For breakfast treats, we couldn’t resist the mini pastry selection, including sfogliatella, cannoli, and the delightful Brioche con Gelato—a warm, soft brioche filled with creamy gelato, an indulgent mix of warm and cold textures. The pastries were light yet delicious, topped with powdered sugar and garnished with candied lemon peel and cherries. With a bill totaling €62 for three, it’s not the cheapest breakfast, but well worth it for the experience. Prices here vary based on seating: standing at the bar is the most affordable, indoor tables add a small charge, and the scenic outdoor seating costs the most. Gambrinus also offers takeaway pastries, so you can grab a treat for later while enjoying a stroll through Naples. Overall, Caffè Gambrinus is a must-visit for anyone wanting a taste of Naples’ history and local flavors, especially with the holiday decor and festive atmosphere that made our morning even more special. Highly recommended!

The most famous cafe and patisserie in Naples - a must visit if you appreciate your sweets! We were quite in a rush so we skipped sitting in a table and instead we ordered a few pastries for take away and munched them on the bar right next to the pastries showcase window. It was so hard to choose out of the great variety they offer, and we eventually went for a few of our favorites - first, pistachio & white chocolate cornetto (to be honest, it wasn't the best one we've had in Italy as it was a bit too sweet and not filled with enough pistachio cream inside). We also chose a sfogliatella like pastry shaped like a cone, filled with amazing vanilla cream and topped with some mini strawberries - this one was my favorite by far as it wasn't too sweet and the dough was super crunchy. Another one was a "lobster tale" filled with pistachio cream which was way better than the pistachio cornetto - it had a deep taste of pistachio and was filled with just the right amount of cream inside. Lastly, our least favorite was a mini zeppola pastry due to the fact that the cream was a bit too thick, and in general it didn't feel as special as the other options we chose. It's important to mentioned that even though some of our choices weren't the best, you could really feel the high quality of the products and the freshness of each and every pastry (even the ones we didn't like so much), so if you're in Naples make sure to not miss this one!

5 star experience, only rating a 4 since it was a bit pricey (explained later). I recommend coming earlier since it is a very popular spot & can fill up fast. We came at about 8:30am and were able to get seated right away (recommend outside, it's a beautiful covered area to sit at out of the sun). By the time we were finishing up there were several groups of people waiting for seats. The cappuccino was delicious & rich. We also ordered a cannolo (so good! great filling) and a slice of the caprese cake . We wanted to try the vesuvia too but unfortunately were told it was not available & would take an hour. Despite that we were very satisfied with our food & coffee and the overall atmosphere. Now for the price. I really wanted to give this place 5 stars because of the wonderful experience. Unfortunately it was pricey (ex 6 euros for a cannolo) probably because it's such a well known spot and near Piazza del Plebiscito. However, for perspective we have eaten at a couple other very popular food spots in Naples (not a cafe but places with many reviews & very long lines/crowds) and despite the popularity their prices have stayed extremely reasonable. Honestly more reasonable than you'd find for mediocre food in the US. Either way highly recommend Gran Caffè Gambrinus on your visit to Naples!
