J Contemporary Japanese Restaurant — Restaurant in Naples

We visited this Michelin-starred restaurant on Saturday. Some of the fish was excellent; especially the bluefin tuna and scallops. But the overall experience was disappointing.

Instead of serving us the 30 piece set we requested (which should have cost €65), the chef brought the pieces individually, which resulted in a total bill of €150. We specifically asked for scallops and bluefin tuna, as advertised online, but were instead served fried shrimp rolls we did not order.

Service was also lacking. The server rarely acknowledged us, and we often had to wait a long time to get his attention. Overall, while the quality of some of the fish was good, the handling of our order and the inattentive service made the experience fall short of expectations.

We showed the waiter a specific photo and clearly asked for scallops, eel, and tuna, but were instead brought other rolls we hadn’t requested. We (my daughter and I) went last night without a reservation, knowing fully well that we were more than likely to be turned away as they were fully booked. The lady at the reception was very kind and agreed to let us order at the bar when she saw that my 10 year old really wanted to eat Japanese after a week of pizza and pasta. The food is incredible - the taste, the plating and the techniques. But above all, it was the friendliness and the ‚customer above all‘ attitude of the entire wait staff, especially Beverly, that made our experience there amazing. She even got us free dessert! It is more expensive than other restaurants in Naples, but for fresh seafood of this quality, you cannot expect to pay less....

A truly astounding, upscale sushi restaurant in Naples, Italy. Stunning interior— sleek, dark, spot lighting…. Staff, professional, friendly, knowledgeable…. Food… really exceptional… the fish quality was top notch… tuna, toro, red shrimp, scallops, sea bass, etc. even the rice was perfectly made… perfect textures and beautiful preparations. Every aspect was highly enjoyable and I would recommend J to anyone who is into good sushi.

My one constructive criticism is that I wish they had paper menus available at least upon request… I found navigating the expansive QR menu on my phone cumbersome.
