The restaurant's ambiance is charming; despite its modest size on the first floor, it boasts a hidden alcove below, adorned with authentic Peruvian souvenirs that enhance its cultural appeal.
Having had the privilege of living in Peru for several years, exploring numerous Peruvian restaurants worldwide, and sharing my life with a Peruvian, I have developed a profound appreciation for authentic Peruvian flavors. Unfortunately, the culinary offerings at this establishment did not meet those expectations.
The anticuchos, traditionally marinated beef heart skewers grilled to achieve a tender and flavorful bite with a slight char, were served cold and lacked the expected robust taste.
The papa rellena, typically a deep-fried mashed potato stuffed with seasoned beef, onions, olives, and hard-boiled eggs, should present a crispy exterior encasing a savory filling. However, the version we received was underfilled and bland, resembling plain purée rather than the flavorful stuffing it should have.
The pie de limón, a Peruvian twist on lemon pie featuring a tangy lemon filling topped with light meringue in a buttery crust, was also disappointing. Our serving had a burnt meringue, and the pie itself was predominantly dough with minimal filling, lacking the balance of textures and flavors characteristic of this dessert.
Lastly, the picarones, doughnut-like treats made from sweet potatoes and squash, traditionally fried to a golden hue and drizzled with a syrup made from unrefined cane sugar, were neither visually appealing nor reminiscent of authentic picarones. Their customary light, airy texture with a slight crispness was absent, leaving much to be desired.
Due to the disappointing experience with these dishes, we chose not to sample other items from the menu during this visit.
We truly appreciate the restaurant's dedication to introducing Peruvian cuisine to a broader audience. With the evident passion and warm hospitality displayed by the staff, there's a strong foundation to build upon. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by Luigi, one of the friendliest hosts we’ve met. The restaurant is family, run, and you can feel the love and authenticity in everything they do. The chef, Carmelo, was fantastic , every dish we tried was full of true Peruvian flavor.
We started with the causa de pollo, which was delicious and beautifully presented. The pulpo parrillero (grilled octopus) was incredibly tender and bursting with flavor. And the lomo saltado , wow! The meat was perfectly cooked and melted in the mouth. Generous portions meant we didn’t have room for dessert, but we left fully satisfied.
