Amazing place. Like it was made specially for me. Because there are so many particular flavors. I had to wait a bit because there were many people but it worth it! Annette was a very kind and nice person. I asked her to advise me the most particular flavors she had. So I took: Kentucky chocolate (with tabacco?) Seadas (I love pecorino cheese, so really wanted to try in the ice cream) Basil, walnuts and honey. Basil taste was so strong, I loved that. And there were many walnuts as well. I willl be back to try other particular flavors I didn’t take this time. The prices are more than reasonable: small (2 flavors) 3€, medium (3 flavors) 3,50€ The only thing that wasn’t good (in my opinion), that the ice cream was served by the same hands that had just taken money. I think it’s a bit unsanitary especially considering the fact that the Covid is not over yet (and not only Covid, there are so many germs on the money even without Covid). Anyway the ice cream was really good. And one more good point: there are some places, so you can eat your gelato inside the gelateria.

One of the best cups of gelato I had during my weeks-long trip to Italy in 2024. So good, I came back twice, and you have to because the inspired flavors change from day to day. Speak Italian con gusto, they really appreciate it. First visit, I had their 'dracarys' (dragonfire), which has peperoncino, dragonfruit, and fragole (strawberry), their basilico-lime (bright green with bits of real basil), and carrot cake (never seen this before... very tasty). For 4.50 euros, a very decent deal. Second visit, I had their 'prince's kiss' which is nocciolo and gianduja, and the Madagascar chocolate which was so rich and flavorful. Incredible gelato. Highly recommend you try their unique flavors, but if you must, yes you can get a vanilla or mango sorbet too. The accolades you'll see on the wall are proof positive of the quality and diversity of this place.

SO good!!!!! Man do I wish we had one of these nearby. Randomly came across Fatamorgana while walking near r rental. LOVE that they use fresh, real ingredients. They have the typical chocolate chip and fruit flavors, which were so delicious. However, they also have some really unusual flavors that r intriguing like chocolate tobacco, black rice w/rose buds, soft cheese w/pear sauce & walnuts, and other herb based flavors. We tried chocolate tobacco & really enjoyed it (didn't try the other wonky flavors). Pricing here is higher than other gelato spots, but it was well worth the cost. The shop has an upscale feel. The man working the counter was quite knowledgeable about all the flavors and it seemed he was being conscientious about cleanliness, which was appreciated. Definitely stop by here if in the area!

I must confess that it pains me just a little that the single greatest gelateria I have ever been to, the greatest ice cream I have ever eaten, the triumph in my exhaustive study of Roman gelato eating, aye the greatest gelateria in Rome, and all with a bit of room to spare, is Fatamorgana.

There are a few reasons for these feelings of irksomeness:

It is a chain. I hate that it is a chain, albeit a minor chain. It appears to have several locations throughout Rome and, get this, one on Ventura Blvd in L.A.; a street that I more or less grew up on. I do not believe that the Ventura Blvd one could be up to the Campo De' Fiori one's standard, but it's certainly possible. Fatamorgana defies human understanding.

It looks like pretty much any run of the mill Rome gelateria. That's a pretty charming standard, but still...

The counter help was... uninspiring. Oh, they weren't mean, or rude, they were just colorless and bland and uninterested.

So did all this leave a bad taste in my mouth?

Noooooooo! Because of all the good tastes in my mouth. There were too many good tastes in my mouth!

I don't know how Fatamorgana does it. I swear to you it must be sorcery.

I am suggesting that someone may have sold their soul to the devil here.

Look, I have been to quite a few great Roman Gelaterias: Come Il Latte, San Crispino, La Strega Nocciola, and dear little Gelateria Del Viale, and great gelaterias do this: They make fresh, consistently excellent flavors, occasionally they might have one creative, off the beaten path flavor that actually works, and once every 15 or 20 flavors these masters of gelato transcend, they extract the essence of a fruit or flavor, bringing it to its brilliant, singing Platonic ideal. Lavender at La Strega, Pistachio (and whipped cream!) at Come Il Latte, Rose at Del Viale. These are flavors that fill one with wonder.

But at Fatamorgana they achieve transcendence not with one or two flavors, but with a full third of all their flavors. They put out their own weird and inventive flavors in a handful, and then they achieve transcendence with those. Avocado lime, Banana sesame, Pear Gorgonzola may look to be gimmicks at first, but they are among the best things I have ever eaten. But these work only because of their deep mastery. Their cherry was a Caravaggio level rendering of the true flavor of the sour cherry, satisfying, hiding nothing, illuminating all to full effect. The banana, oh the banana. Long have I counted banana as my favorite ice cream flavor, but almost on a conjectural basis. They say bananas were better and more flavorful in the sixties but they were all killed off and we eat a different variety today. Does Fatamorgana have a secret stash of this lost banana? Because I have waited my whole life for this banana. This is Ur-Banana, these are purified flavors. Nothing candy, nothing false, never too sweet or not sweet enough, it all tastes real, yet transformed by mystic alchemy into gelato, cold, smooth, creamy gelato.

The King is dead.

Long...

Fatamorgana was among the top two gelato places we visited. I tasted several flavors and if I had more time, I’d make several more visits. I went with Madagascar chocolate and seadas. The chocolate was hands down the best I had on this trip to Italy. Good chocolate gelato - especially dark chocolate gelato is hard to do. You want the richness and deep flavor of the chocolate to shine thru the mostly milky gelato base. In my book, the gelato is merely a cold vehicle - what you need to taste ultimately is the same lingering notes as you would if you were to savor the creamy inside of a top notch dark chocolate truffle. A bit of a catch-22, since the ice cream is cold and the rich notes only register at higher temperatures. I’ve tried and failed several times trying to make a chocolate gelato that’s satisfying. With the Madagascar, they nailed it. I savored every single bite and let it melt in my mouth. The seadas was very good - bold flavors of the cheese and honey comes thru. Hard to take this off your list if you want the most creative and deep...
