The highlights of I Monticiani is the tiramisu (best I've had in Rome, a city I often return to), the steak, and Nando. You can spot a good restaurant in Rome when the staff are relaxing by the door and not calling you in, at I Monticiani passersby were greeted with a warm "hello" or "Buonasera" but there was no ushering inside like with some places near tourist hotspots. We immediately fell in love with this restaurant when Nando greeted us so warmly after sitting down, singing Thunderstuck when he noticed my boyfriend's ACDC t shirt. The first night, we had the empanadas, carbonara, steak, chips, and tiramisu. We left clean plates behind us. On our last night, we knew where we wanted to have our final meal in Rome, this time swapping out the carbonara for the boneless chicken and more chips (they were fluffy and crunchy, the perfect chip). We were also introduced to two types of Chimichurri, one of which I'm even tempted to make at home - though I know it won't match I Monticiani. If you made it this far in the review, that's a sign you should go and...

To set the scene - we were fresh off a long flight and got a bus to Roma Termini and then walked to our hotel in the heat. We are starving and stop at the first place that looked decent. Now, two weeks later, my partner asks me what was the best dish I had in Italy? It has to be the carbonara in I Monticiani!
We stopped in to this small restaurant and sat outside under the shelter. The staff were quick, attentive, and proficient.
We ordered the mixed meats and cheese antipasti to share - this was very good quality, though a fairly basic selection. We also got the caprese salad which was fresh and excellent.
The most impressive part was the pasta dishes - my partner got the ragu which he get was tasty, but I got the carbonara which was amazing! The sauce was strongly egg yolky and of an excellent flavour. My partner couldn’t stop stealing bites!
This is a quaint, casual restaurant, which would not be suitable for an event or nice night out, but an excellent find where you won’t be...
Read moreUnfortunately we found this restaurant at the last evening of our Rome trip. We arrived at the restaurant at around 9:00pm and the waiter assigned us the last (non-reserved) table for this evening - What luck!
Our order: 1 bottle of water, 1 bottle Italian red-wine, 2 steaks (200gr. & 300gr.), 2x home made fries, chocolate cake, 2 café, 3 digesitf (= overall about 80eur). Wine: fine - exactly our taste. Fries: definitively home-made and tasty ! Chocolate cake: 1 was enough for 2 - lot of molten chocolate inside - delicious Digestif: after reference of the waiter and free sample - great STEAKS: The highlight of the evening. High meat quality, perfect prepared (desired doneness on point - medium & medium rare), delicious taste and aromatic/appetizing smell.
It's a fact that we will visit "I Monticiani" again if we will come back to Rome. We can recommend the restaurant because of the top food and the very friendly and brilliant service/employees. Thank you all for a great last evening (dinner)...
