The manager, perhaps owner, wisely explained the way they price their menu when we, 6 people who clearly looked like tourists, asked for a table. It initially threw us off, but then we realized we did get to choose our entree somewhat, so we sat down and enjoyed the best meal we had in Rome. My dad can't really walk, so we ate a lot of meals at places around his hotel. Most of them had all the hallmarks of catering to tourists. Menu's in English... food coming out of the kitchen alarmingly fast... slushy machine by the door... inflated prices and ho-hum food. Honestly, the 30 dollars per person at Osteria Dell'Angelo is a FARRRRR better value than paying a la carte at a touristy place.
4-stars for service only because the older server wasn't very friendly, but he was a character, didn't dislike him at all. We did look like poorly dressed American tourists, no doubt about that. The younger server was fantastic, deserving of 5 stars. Very friendly and helpful.
4-stars for atmosphere because the view outside wasn't awesome, but if somebody were to say "hey, it's about the food! who cares?" I wouldn't completely disagree. A nice piazza with some people watching would have been preferable to my dad, but unfortunately his inability to walk made us choose a place where he could step right out from the taxi and practically just sit down.
I can't recommend this...
Read moreGenuinely disappointed. The amatriciana was not punchy with flavour at all. My friend had the gnocchi and barely touched it. The antipasto was beans in tomato sauce, panini with mortadella and a couple of bruschetta. All a bit random. The main of oxtail was decent but by no means the best I’ve had. Meat was juicy and fell off the bone but the sauce was just ok. The other main was meatballs on a white sauce. That means nothing to me and the waiter who wasn’t the friendliest, didn’t offer an explanation and looked frustrated whenever we asked anything. The cicoria was nice. The artichoke in some gloopy sauce and was just avg. House wine was nice enough. Didn’t bother with the deserts as I couldn’t be bothered to try anymore of the average food. I’m not the biggest fan of roman cuisine I’ll admit but I love all the things we ordered and it was quite embarrassing as I took a visitor with me. He now thinks I have...
Read moreWe tried to walk in around 20.00 on Friday. The restaurant was empty besides 2-3 tables. We asked for a table for two, and the man who greeted us rudely responded “no”. I asked why and he stated “reservations only”. I pointed out that there were tables open everywhere, and he just turned away and ignored us. I’m guessing they wanted to close early since things were slow (they closed at 23.00), which is totally fine if they simply communicated that. We came on a website recommendation and walked over 10 mins from the Vatican after walking around all day. We found a restaurant around the corner instead, but it was the only time we were treated rudely during our 3 weeks in Italy. I live in NYC and I can understand being fed up with tourists, but it’s not an excuse to treat...
