A Delightful Surprise: Japanese Dining in Sorrento
When visiting Sorrento, sushi may not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, after an exquisite yet heavy lunch, we had little desire to dine again that evening.
Fortunately, Franco at the front desk of the Hilton reminded us of the Japanese restaurant on the hotel’s seventh floor.
One of the joys of Japanese cuisine is its lightness, freshness, and vibrant flavors. Much like the Italians, the Japanese take immense pride in their culinary traditions.
Upon entering the restaurant, we were captivated by the stunning nighttime views of Sorrento, the Bay of Naples, and Mount Vesuvius.
The menu at J, the contemporary Japanese restaurant, further impressed us with its extensive selection, not only a wide variety of sushi and sashimi but also a delightful array of traditional Japanese specialties.
After discussing our reluctance to indulge in a heavy meal with Eve, our attentive and knowledgeable waitress, she offered perfect recommendations for our dinner.
We began with Spicy Edamame, delightful Handmade Gyoza, and Teriyaki Chicken Fried Rice. To complete our meal, we savored a selection of sushi and sashimi, all paired with a bottle of Rosato, which complemented the flavors of the raw fish and soy beautifully as we enjoyed the breathtaking view.
As Eve cleared our table, she inquired if we could find room for dessert. Though we initially declined, we couldn’t resist the tempting “Tiramisù Roll al Thè Matcha e Cioccolato Bianco.” It was a delightful way to conclude our meal, merging Italian and Japanese culinary artistry.
Overall, we had a lovely evening with no regrets about dining after all or indulging in Japanese cuisine in Sorrento.
A huge compliment to Carmine’s team, especially to Kimberly and Eve for their excellent service. We look forward to returning, especially when we can fully embrace the complete...
Read moreDuring our honeymoon stay at the Hilton Plaza in Sorrento, my husband and I discovered an absolute gem: J Contemporary Japanese Restaurant. Our experience was so exceptional that we dined there three nights in a row, each visit better than the last.
Night One: From the moment we walked in, we were warmly welcomed. We started with the gyoza, which was incredibly delicious—crispy on the outside and bursting with flavor on the inside. The sushi was equally impressive, boasting a freshness that truly stood out. We left that evening already planning our return.
Night Two: Returning the next night, we were greeted like old friends. We couldn’t resist ordering the gyoza again and tried a sushi platter that offered a delightful variety. To our surprise and delight, the staff treated us to complimentary tiramisu dessert rolls. The unique twist on this classic dessert was both unexpected and delightful.
Night Three: By our third visit, it was clear we had found our favorite spot. We indulged in the chef’s choice sushi selection, which was a masterpiece of flavors and presentation, along with the beloved gyoza. The staff surprised us once again with a complimentary shot of caramel vodka, a perfect sweet finish to an outstanding meal.
Throughout our visits, the staff were consistently attentive and kind, making us feel special and valued. The sushi chefs were nothing short of artists, crafting each dish with precision and passion. It’s a bittersweet feeling knowing we can’t dine there again tomorrow night, but we leave with fond memories of this exceptional dining experience.
We couldn’t recommend J Contemporary Japanese Restaurant enough. If you’re in Sorrento, make it a priority to visit—you won’t be...
Read moreThis is not a Japanese restaurant in any respect outside the name. There is really very little fish in any of the rolls. They use imitation Krab as fish or crab in most rolls. For instance, they call their Spicy Tuna Roll from the menu:
"SPICY TUNA 20€ GRANCHIO, TONNO, AVOCADO, SALSA PICCANTE CRAB MEAT, TUNA, AVOCADO, SPICY SAUCE"
In reality, this is an 8 piece inside out roll with fake krab roll topped with a tiny piece of tuna 2x6 cm and 4mm thick on top with a dollop of spicy mayo and a drop of their "spicy sauce". It is false advertising and terrible flavour.
I alerted the on duty manager and he claimed there were allowed to lie about the Crab. I ordered 2 rolls, did not finish the first, once I realized the filling was clearly not crab, and awful. He did take the other off the bill, but was not knowledgeable about sushi in any respect.
The regular sushi pieces did have some real fish albeit without the requisite wasabi, and the drinks were inexpensive. I had an Asahi for only 6€.
I have had far better Carrefour sushi. None of fish is fresh, only frozen thawed.
If you like Japanese food or sushi you...
