La Locanda di Vicolo IV — Restaurant in Syracuse

Everything was fine until I realized they were trying to be smart by scamming us over a small thing. I went there with a Fork discount (which doesn’t apply to drinks), and they tried to sneak the discount off the drinks anyway.

The lady working there seemed very nice. She didn’t say a word in English, but she had this charming way of communicating in Italian and with gestures that made it easy to go along with. We ordered half a liter of wine; she even showed it using a 1L water bottle and pointed to the halfway mark. But when the wine came, it was a quarter liter pitcher. My partner and I thought maybe it was a simple mistake; half a liter was €6 and a quarter was €3, so no big deal.

Then the bill came, and the price was €10. Turns out she charged for two glasses instead of a quarter liter. Why? No idea. If it was “two glasses,” why did I have to pour it myself from the same pitcher? She even said “piccolo” several times, meaning small. There was never even any mention of “two glasses.”

It is funny because we actually ordered half a liter again before the bill came. So we payed 6 euros for 50cl but 10 euros for 25cl. :D

The food itself was okay. We were really hungry, so we ate everything, but that doesn’t say much. The starters were tasty, but the Sicilian pasta was pretty bland. I didn’t hate the food, but the way they played this little “tourist trick” really ruined the experience for me. I hope they realize how much this kind of thing can affect...

Wonderful B&B with rooms on the Eastern side of Ortigia, Siracusa - we chose the disability access room which helped my elderly mother navigate the bathroom. Breakfast was included and had a wide selection of yoghurt, fruit, fruit juice, coffee, cakes, cereal and an option for a DIY toastie. The connected restaurant (where breakfast is held) has a great menu in English as well as Italian. Marco was very helpful in booking our airport transfers and a boat trip around the island, as well as helping us navigate the local buses (just 1.50 per ticket, great to do a loop of the island). The only downside was other guests who kept thinking our room was theirs - it can be scary hearing a key rattle in the lock...
