What a disappointment. Eataly is a store and a restaurant, with two (or maybe three levels). I picked something up at the store and paid the friendly cashier. This interaction just took a couple of minutes at most, so my review is for the restaurant, where we had lunch. When I entered the restaurant I asked a woman for a table for two. She stopped a man (probably a waiter) if there is. table for two and he just snapped at me: "sotto" and took off. I'm pretty sure that means "downstairs". I asked two more people for help to get a table, but they pretended like they didn't hear or see me and they just kept walking. Finally, a nice young man found us a table. But, the food was terrible. My husband ordered a pizza focaccia and I ordered hummus. The focaccia was soggy and the cheese just tasted bad. It sort of reminded me of a very bad pizza place in the United States. The hummus wasn't bad per se but it was definitely lacking. The beet, beans, and spices didn't meld and except for the beet flavor, it was just bland and under seasoned and I left most of my dish. Trying to pay the check was another undertaking. We had trouble getting someone's attention, they just don't see or hear us, and when we finally got a woman's attention she quickly said something to us, like we were being scolded but I don't really know what she said. To me, she seemed impatient and had a snippy tone and then she walked off. We thought that maybe she was getting our check but it didn't come, so my husband walked up to another woman, who took our credit card. I've eaten at places where I was disappointed with the food but if the staff is polite, I don't like to disparage them because I know they can read from other reviewers that their food is not that popular but I don't hesitate in writing a bad review when the food is bad and the people are rude and this restaurant deserves just one star for food and service. However, I gave one extra star for service because the cashier at the store was nice and I wanted to give...
Read moreDisgrace to the brand Eataly. I LOVED the Eataly in NYC so I was so excited to bring my husband and daughter. But it was a sheer disappointment.
The flaw starts with the system that you have to pay right after you place the order, before you even get your beverage. We found this strange so we paused a bit and hesitated before taking out our wallet. Then the server from hell named Alessia D. was so defensive in her attitude & tone in saying that this was the system and there was nothing we can do about it. We weren't complaining, we were just taken aback because of such an odd system. Then the other shortcomings followed:
2 out of 5 whites and 1 out of 5 red wines on the list were 'out of stock' and it was only about 8pm. Seriously? You've got tons of wines on the retail shelf in the store, but you cannot even keep your own wine list in stock?? Red wine was served so warm, we think it was about 25°C. My octopus was nice but my main course fish was so salty and UNDERCOOKED, it was simply BAD. Also the side items for both dishes were the same: green leaves and potato. For a brand that is based on the whole eating holistically and all, shouldn't they have some varieties??? My husband's lamb chops, on the other hand, had no seasoning whatsoever that we had to 'transport' my excess salt from the fish to lamb. Needless to say that didn't go too well. I really wonder if there is a real trained chef behind the kitchen overseeing the menu and recipe in this place.
All these disappointments happening but no server comes to check on our food because, of course, if I were the server I wouldn't either. The bill has been paid and there is no incentive to upsell either.... and most customers are one-off tourists and will never be back anyway. so why bother? So we didn't bother to try any other dishes or finish our unsatisfactory meal in the hopes that maybe dessert will do some service recovery. I should have followed the warnings of the...
Read moreDisappointing Experience at Eataly
Our recent visit to Eataly was deeply disappointing, primarily due to the chaotic and inattentive service. Despite the restaurant’s reputation, the experience fell far below expectations.
First, we ordered water and wine, but the wine was served only at the end of the meal—far too late to enjoy. Additionally, a meat dish that was advertised to come with polenta was instead served with mashed potatoes. When we inquired about this substitution, the waitress responded dismissively, saying, “I have two hands,” which came across as both unprofessional and unkind.
The lack of coordination among the staff and the overall absence of a cohesive dining experience were glaring. The spirit of hospitality that one expects from such an establishment was entirely missing.
To add to the disappointment, we ordered an espresso martini that arrived lukewarm, as though it had been left under the desert sun—a far cry from the quality one would expect from a renowned establishment.
Sadly, this visit was the worst dining experience I’ve had in 30 years. I cannot recommend Eataly to anyone based on this experience. The lack of care, professionalism, and attention to detail made it an unfortunate and...
