I recently visited Venice with a friend on a short day trip for the first time. Exploring a narrow side street, we spotted a cozy, rustic looking little place with an appealing menu and good prices. It looked like a few locals were eating there. We had a delicious, early lunch at Birreria Forst and the people were so friendly! By the time we left, there was a line! Next door was a more pricy restaurant where a waiter was calling out to passersby to come in. We found that very unappealing. Later in the day, we were at St. Mark's Square, hot and thirsty. Rather than pay 10 Euros (plus a cover) to share a bottle of water, we walked the few blocks back to Birreria Forst, where we got a yummy Limoncello Spritz for 5 Euros! Also, it was a little strong (we watched him pour - not cheap on the limoncello!), and I asked the man to pour some off and add soda. Instead, he poured my drink into a bigger glass and added soda! So nice! If I go back to Venice, I will definitely stop again for lunch and and aperitif at...
Read moreOrdered food to-go first day in Venice while still jet-lagging so I cannot speak on the beer and only saw the ambience in passing. That said, the sandwiches and sweets stand on their own as some of the most excellent and cheap snack-lunch food we had in Venice (and we had a lot). The big sandwiches were simple combos of veggie cheese meat and condiment that all worked well. The little sandwiches were great samplings of their tasty local meats and cheeses, also all well paired. The zelati I tried rivaled the best chocolate chip cookies I have ever eaten. I ordered a small feast for two and it set me back 10 euros. Given its location and quality I would have paid twice that and considered it reasonable. If it's not considered one of the best spots for sandwiches in the Castello area then it's...
Read moreVery disappointing since we got excited about the recent reviews until we realized they were not accurate, at least not anymore. All food is premade and stored in a buffet fridge with very limited options for sandwiches which are somewhat stale and boggy. The most unsavory thing was the Coke bottle being priced at €4.5, more expensive than in the lobby of our hotel. I have not tried the beer to judge the quality of the brewery. The place has a bar vibe so not the best option if you were hoping for a cooling break or a quiet conversation. In general, I would say I left this place with a bitter taste in my...
