La Nuova Grotta — Restaurant in Venice

When my friends and I saw this place from the outside, the expectations were high. Combined with the prices we thought, that this was going to be a delicious meal... We were completely wrong unfortunately. Me and 1 other ordered "spaghetti alla carbonara", a dish that I absolutely love and almost find it impossible to dislike. That was until i tried the carbonara at "La Nuova Grotta". First of all, a really small portion (which I did expect), but the taste was so terrible. You could only taste egg and pepper (not bacon, cream, spaghetti and parmesan), which I really disliked. The whole time I thought to myself that I could make something better...

The only reason I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 is, that the pizza my other friend got was good and the service was okay.

Very nice restaurant with very accommodating staff. We had just finished touring Palazzo Ducale with my 83 year old parents and looking for an early lunch before they boarded their cruise ship. Even though the restaurant had not opened for the day (we were ~10 minutes early), they allowed us to sit down. This was very nice as it was cold and rainy and my mother wanted to sit down.

Chef came out and offered a couple suggestions. We had the mixed seafood appetizer which was outstanding. My wife and mom had the carbonara, my father had the chicken scallopine and I had seafood risotto. Paired with a good bottle of wine and everyone thought their meal was delicious.

Kind of a tourist trap. If you stop to look at the menu, the guy outside will try to rope you in. Which isn't inherently a problem.

The food is hit-or-miss. Their seafood is great, but expensive. They weigh a fish or other item and charge per gram, but once cooked, they'll remove things like the head, even if you want them. So the amount you're charged doesn't correspond at all to the weight you're served.

The other food is middling. The pasta and pizza taste fine, but at least the pizza is very much in American style rather than authentic. These items, at least, are inexpensive.

Beware, there's a 12% service charge built in (to trick foreigners who are used to tipping), make sure they agree to take it off before...
