As I sit here just outside Pizzeria La Perla, I can’t help but share what an incredible experience we’ve just had. We’ve been exploring Venice for the past four days, trying out various restaurants, but nothing—and I mean nothing—comes close to what we experienced here tonight.

We were here to celebrate my life partner’s father’s 70th birthday, and from the moment we walked in, it was clear that this place was something special. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, but the true star of the evening was Safiq. Now, Safiq wasn’t just any server—he was the smoothest charmer in Venice, I think my love was even thinking about a change of partners to be fair, I was ok with it. Why? Because nearly was to!!

The service was so extraordinary, and Safiq’s playful banter just added to the fun. It was all in good spirits and made our evening even more memorable.

But let’s not forget about the food. The pictures I took of the steak—which was a complimentary upgrade for Dennis’ birthday—and the birthday cake they provided completely free of charge, only begin to capture the kindness and generosity we felt. These gestures weren’t just kind; they reflected the deep care and passion that the staff here, led by Safiq, put into everything they do. From start to finish, the service was impeccable, making us feel like royalty while keeping the mood light and joyous.

And the food? Exceptional. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the surprise birthday cake was the icing on the proverbial cake of an already fantastic evening.

Drumroll please… As I headed back in, we were greeted with a tray full of shots for everyone in the party, which was nine people. It really did go above and beyond. I can’t explain how great they were. I would recommend anyone to go to this restaurant, but I would especially recommend anyone celebrating a birthday in Venice to visit this place. They even put up some decorations that we brought along and allowed us to do pretty much whatever we wanted—balloons, banners, hats, nothing was a problem. They really played the part perfectly. Amazing. Well done, Pizzeria La Perla.

❌ 30 minutes wait for the bill

The food was average. But to be fair, we only ordered the pasta dish and a few others, but not their pizzas which were apparently their strong point (based on reviews)

30 minutes wait for the bill:

We asked for the bill, and the waiter cleared the table and said ok. Later, another waiter cleared some other stuff and asked if we wanted anything else, we said we were done and would like the bill (second time asking for the bill)

Ever since then, we've been waiting for the bill. It was 30-40 minutes of waiting and I eventually grew impatient and tried to get the attention of other waiters, but they were pretending not to see us. This was very obvious, and my dad also has some recording of what was happening.

Meanwhile, the waiters were sitting new customers right next to us.

After finally getting the attention of the waiter (because she was taking the order of the table next to us), they finally came over and I asked for the bill (third time). After some more waiting, the bill finally came.

Is it racism? I'm not sure. I did hear a few waiters commenting about the ethnicity of my family. But it could very well just be terrible service. But it's definitely one of the two. For the first time, I felt like the service charge was way too much for the kind of service provided.

I also can't comprehend how the staff can see us waiting for 30 minutes for the bill and not remember we had asked for it. They sat new customers beside us - so they definitely saw us waiting (maybe too patiently?) at an empty table.

It's 2022, and I hope it wasn't racism. I'd never want my family members to feel hated or out of place when they travel.
