Ichiriki — Restaurant in Beppu

Very, very nice restaurant. The barbecue beef was really nice and the staff was very warm and welcoming. They didn't have an english menu and one of the waiters only speak very little english, so ordering was quite a challenge. But unlike other restaurants who'll just leave you all to yourself, the waiters really made a lot of effort to help us. They showed us samples and we also tried pointing at the food other customers ordered (big thanks to the other customers at that time for bearing with us). Their warmth really made a huge difference to make our dining experience really pleasant. But I think factoring out the staff's warmth and sincerity, the food is really great. The beef barbecue was really excellent and the price was very reasonable. If you happen to be in Beppu near the Beppu station area, I strongly suggest you try...

This place was a bit insane for myself, and would be for most foreigners, so go with a Japanese person who knows the scene and how it all works. From the time we came in and were seated to the time food arrived at our table it was like 2 minutes tops... Very fast paced. Staff were attentive and on the ball. It's a small and tight little place, but is bigger than it looks as they have multiple rooms that I didn't even see, but saw people guided there. We sat right across the kitchen in the corner table. Food was great, no complaints. Unlimited cabbage if you want it. Saw a big group of Chinese tourists being led to the back through the kitchen to another room somewhere, so they definitely use all the space they have to...

Expérience particulière … pour les touristes européens que nous sommes. Nous voyageons depuis 2 mois au Japon, en voiture dans les campagnes lointaines comme dans les grandes villes, et jusqu’à aujourd’hui, nous n’avons jamais ressenti de gêne dans un restaurant local, au contraire. Nous avons tenté de manger ici hier, mais sans succès, tout était « full ». J’ai donc réservé pour le lendemain soir (ce soir), ce qui avait l’air de les faire chier, pardonnez-moi l’expression, mais ils ont accepté.

Nous arrivons donc ce soir dans le restaurant, où on nous redit que c’est full, d’un ton peu aimable et en nous dévisageant du regard. Je leur dis que nous avons réservé hier, ils insistent en disant « full full » (on ne s’était peut-être pas compris). Bref, j’insiste gentiment et ils finissent par comprendre qu’on a réservé et nous installent à une table. Le serveur (un jeune super, très gentil qui parlait un peu anglais), vient prendre notre commande. Une fois la commande reçue, nous avons passé le repas à être dévisagée par le couple local à côté de nous, qui parlait clairement et ouvertement sur notre gueule. La dame épiait chacun de nos faits et gestes, sans réelle gêne, c’était vraiment pénible et irrespectueux. Bon, ce n’est pas la faute du restaurant ça, mais c’est pour souligner l’ambiance générale.

Aussi, nous n’avons jamais reçu nos 2 riz larges commandés. Par contre nous les avons bien payés à la fin… mais comme tout est écrit en chiffres sur l’addition, on s’en est rendu compte trop tard.

Bref, la qualité de la viande était TOP, mais l’ambiance générale nous a laissé sur notre fin. L’impression d’être dévisagé à peine rentré dans le restaurant, tous les regards figés sur nous, plein de jugement… une curiosité malsaine qui nous a vraiment mis mal à l’aise. C’est dommage… nous étions pourtant plein de bonnes volontés, et faisons notre maximum pour respecter la culture et les coutumes locales.

Je ne vais pas faire de généralité, ce cas s’applique à notre expérience uniquement, et peut-être sommes-nous arrivés à une mauvaise période ?...
