Toyotsune Honten — Restaurant in Beppu

The place has a diner / fast food vibe, with most waiters walking around slightly too quickly, semi-neurotically, and delivering the food — which is not great and not worthy of much praise — a bit too fast. (I.e., the fast food vibe.) The flavors are clean but mostly bland, and the much-hyped toriten is just chicken tempura. Which isn’t bad per se, maybe this is the way it is supposed to be, but far from transcendent. The flounder was so over-fried and dry (see picture) that I failed at eating it which chopsticks. Not sure I would have had more success with a fork and knife either, but definitely not meant for a chopstick approach. Anyway, at the end of the day, it’s moderately palatable food at a modest price....

I must say, this restaurant tops the list of places I've tried. The staff is incredibly warm and welcoming. They're fluent in English and will offer an English menu if they realize you're not a native Japanese speaker. Once you've got your menu, they're quick to recommend which dip complements each dish.

As for the food, I went for the tempura set. The flavors were extraordinary. It's easily the most delectable tempura I've ever tasted. The preparation was impeccable, exuding a delightful aroma, and the texture was wonderfully crispy.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Restaurant TOYOTSUNE HONTEN in Beppu and it was an incredible experience! The prawn tempura was absolutely delicious - the batter was perfectly crispy and the prawns were cooked to perfection. But what really set this dish apart was the restaurant's special sauce - it was the perfect balance of sweet and savory and really brought out the flavors in the tempura. The service was also excellent - our server was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal.
