I live in Tokyo and often come to Beppu. Bar 556 (kokoro) is my favorite place in Beppu, where I can always relax and enjoy conversation with Tsujii-san (the owner/bartender) and other guests, including locals and travelers. Tsujii-san, super friendly and bilingual in Japanese and English, welcomes everyone warmly and makes sure everyone feels at home and has a hearty moment in his cozy bar. I also love the fact that he has an extensive selection of local sake and shochu and offers mocktail and other nonalcoholic options. I highly recommend Bar556 to everyone, including those international tourists feeling lost in translation and looking for a memorable moment with locals.

He has a library full of libations with different flavors, origins and interesting labels. Steak flavors, flowers and fruit influences in some bottles left me very curious. The women here enjoy conversation and seem happy with their specialty prepared drinks. (Not a pick-up place) Lots of couples, too. Quite a range from locals, Japan tourists and International visitors. Ask him to speak some "Chinese". It will bring a smile to your face.

The atmosphere there is indescribable, you just feel at home surrounded with friends. We had a magical night. Thank you again a million times ! We will make sure to come back when in Beppu.
