I watched a Youtube Video titled "They come from ALL OVER to eat at this food stand Yatai" and more or less planned a Fukuoka trip with my girlfriend for the Yatai experience.
I'm Japanese but never lived in Japan and I'm sure the staff there noticed that it was, in fact, our first time at a Yatai. The head chef (taisho) Yamakawa-san and his sous-chef were both hospitable from the start, cracking jokes to break the ice and taking the time to make conversation with us and surrounding tables. He was thoroughly impressed by the fact that me and my girlfriend drink the equivalent of 2-3 tables and waived our out time. I see that a lot of the bad reviews on Yatais across Fukuoka are because the taisho had to enforce the out time - this is a cultural thing that is the norm there as Yatais only have around 10 seats so they are a volume business and if someone is not constantly eating and drinking, they are losing money so it is not their fault.
We ended up going there a total of 4 times in a span of 10 days, making a bunch of Yatai friends on those nights. The vibes were amazing as we shared tables with total strangers and even met some of taisho's classmates and it was hilarious because they kept making fun of each other for our entertainment. We were sat next to a Korean couple at one point and taisho knew a bit of Hangul also and was trying his best to make sure they were happy and comfortable as well. No, we did not bother going to any other Yatais though I'm sure they're good but we already knew it wouldn't compare to here.
Honestly, no dish is a miss, we've tried pretty much everything but a must is the mentaiko egg, the ramen (taisho makes his own ramen oil which is FIRE), and the yaki-ramen. If you're the fancy eater that seeks out Michelin star restaurants and linen tablecloths this is definitely not for you but if you're into real conversations, good food at a decent price, and an unforgettable cultural experience in Fukuoka, this is the only yatai you need to go to. Fukuoka is known as the food capital of Japan and we had amazing food at other establishments but this was the one that sticks out the most in our heads. 6 out of...
Read moreWhat an incredible experience! I was thrilled to try a 屋台 (street food stall) in Japan for the first time. The atmosphere of sitting right on the bustling street for a meal was truly unique.
The seating was a bit snug, but it added to the charm and fun of the dining experience. We ordered the 'standard ramen', 'sauté ramen', 'dumplings', and 'mentaiko Japanese omelette'. Every dish was bursting with flavor and absolutely delicious! I'm convinced you can't go wrong with anything on the menu.
The place was buzzing with locals, which is always...
Read moreThis little roadside restaurant is a gem (probably like so many of its kind). I came here because some of the restaurants I had chosen had no room, and what I experienced and ate was great! Here you experience authenticity and are in the real Japan. I tried several dishes and was extremely satisfied with all of them. "Umami“ probably best describes the taste of the food. The atmosphere was very friendly and the two chefs were very competent. I can only recommend...
