純喫茶マイアミ Coffee shop — Restaurant in Hakone

We arrived at the shop a bit late, around 4:55 PM, with the last order being at 5:00 PM. Since we had already eaten a lot, we just wanted a quick drink or dessert before heading back to our ryokan. There was a lady who greeted us with a look that can only be described as if she had found something unpleasant on the street.

Living in Japan, I politely asked in Japanese if it was too late to order something quickly. I was prepared to leave if she said no. Instead, she curtly replied, "No food, others OK," without looking at us and walked away. It was incredibly disheartening to have a server who couldn't even stand next to us, make eye contact, or speak clearly.

A few minutes later, she came back and reiterated, "Only drinks." When I asked about dessert, she simply ignored me. Thankfully, another lady with white hair approached us and kindly explained the situation. Since some of us wanted to have some desserts, we apologized and decided to leave.

I understand that she might have had negative experiences with foreign tourists in the past, but that doesn't justify her rude behavior towards us when we were trying to be respectful and follow the rules. Her attitude not only tarnishes the image of the tourist spot but also indicates she might be better suited to a less tourist-heavy environment for her...

🟨 The cafe was so pleasant and cozy looking and is an authentic vintage-style cafe. ✳️The coffee we drank was brewed from good quality beans, I can tell.

🟧🙏🏻 I highly recommend this little coffeehouse if you wish to have just coffee or tea or a good meal at reasonable prices and then sit there and do people-watching.
