Got yelled at by the chef for trying to politely clarify an incorrect bill. We were given a bill for 3x what we ordered (about $100 for $35 worth of food). When we asked to understand the cost, the chef refused to let the waitress help us and instead yelled at us for a while before calling us tourists and shouting at us to go home.
For reference, we ordered two beers, two small sashimi plates, an oyster, and an abalone dish—priced at 7,100 yen. Our bill was for over 17,000 yen.
The chef ultimately realized he had the bill wrong, briefly said he was sorry, and still overbilled us by $15. The worst interaction I've had not just in Japan but in any country.
The rest of the staff was kind and apologetic, and the food was pretty good. Judging by the other reviews, this seems like it's generally a good place. Unfortunately, our experience was awful and others should be cautious if they don't speak Japanese.
Mistakes and misunderstandings happen with a language barrier, but there's no excuse for treating anyone the way we were treated.
Edit: I think the owner's response speaks for itself. If you're worried about slowing down service, I'd suggest starting by giving customers the correct bill. I may not understand much Japanese, but I do understand the universal languages of human kindness and (fortunately for me) basic math. I hope no one ever treats you the way you treated us.
Edit 2: The owner has now changed his response to claim that he never overcharged us because the sashimi price varies daily. The price may vary, but we were still initially given an incorrect bill. He knows it, and he admitted it.
I never accused him of deliberately overcharging us, because mistakes happen. But when we politely asked the (very nice) waitress to clarify the bill, he yelled at us from the kitchen for several minutes and ended by telling us to go home. It was a terrible way to treat anyone, let alone a guest in your restaurant. This all could have been avoided if you'd shown us a little patience by taking a second to look at the bill or the message we'd typed on Google Translate, but you decided to be rude instead. So I guess you just have to live with...
Read moreThe best food I’ve had so far in Japan! Very friendly staff, who were happy to help us although we didn’t speak Japanese and couldn’t understand the menu. Very nice range of drinks as well as combinations of saké and oysters (“it’s a marriage” said the chef). For sure a recommendation if you’re...
Super Atmosphäre, spontan Platz bekommen ohne Reservierung, alles rundum perfekt. Würde sofort...
