I really wanted to enjoy the atmosphere of this place. Having read reviews about how fun and relaxed the evenings are here, I was looking forward to a fun evening. I chose a restaurant recommended by a famous blogger. However, when I arrived, the employee was already washing the brazier, and when he saw us, he was clearly not happy about having to wash it again. We sat down, and nothing was explained to us; we ordered based on the pictures on the menu, as well as drinks. Even though I spoke Japanese, the service was in English, and it was very dry. There was no conversation while the food was being cooked; the atmosphere was like an exam - you just watch and say yes or no at the right moment. I thought this would be more atmospheric... As for the okonomiyaki - one was very salty, and I just didn't like the second one. We couldn't finish it; unfortunately, this is the first time in Japan that we've had a bad experience. A...
Read moreStopped by on my Japan trip since, you know, it's Hiroshima and you have to eat okonomiyaki here. We chose Denkousekka (電光石火), the popular one with the red banner; it wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing. My mom could do better, and she's not your world class chef. It was only after I asked to have some sauce and mayo on the side that I first thought "Mm!", which I think says something. The soba doesn't have much flavor, and the meat is yummy because meat is yummy? Now, this isn't their fault, but they were also so crowded that it took forever to get our food, much longer than I'm used to in Japan. Honestly, please...take my advice and just go to a lonelier restaurant in the hiroba and make the chef's day. Maybe they're less well advertised but I'm sure the ojisans will be happy and take...
Read moreThis is a must when in Hiroshima. Take the lift to the top floor. You can experience the famous local food Okonomiyaki, which is made fresh right in front of you. We went to okonomiyaki momichan store in the food court there, turn left as you come out of the left and then first on the right if I remember correctly! The store owner Koichi was so lovely and entertaining and it was maybe our best meal from our 3 weeks in Japan. It was incredibly cheap also including the beer. The ingredients are super fresh and local. I had the super cheese, see pic, and my partner had the seafood version, both were incredible. It’s a very short walk from the Hiroshima station. Not...
