I’ve been going to Breizh in Tokyo and Paris for many years, so I was happy to come across this outlet in Kyoto. It’s in a beautiful, inviting little house with a lovely terrace in the back that has a nice view of Kyoto’s quaint streets and houses.
The menu consists of all the classics, as well as some items unique to this outlet and seasonal specialities. Everything is available a la carte or in various sets.
As we had spent the morning sightseeing and doing a lot of walking, we were fairly hungry and opted for two sets: one with a classic galette and one with the addition of seasonal vegetables. Both were excellent.
I had the soup of the day with my set: a pumpkin soup, available hot or cold. At the waitresses’s suggestion, I opted for cold, and it was delicious and refreshing. The salad with the other set was likewise fresh and tasty.
My set included a dessert crepe, so I opted for a simple one with French butter and brown sugar from Okinawa, which we shared.
For drinks, as part of the sets, we had two glasses of cider, one sweet and one dry, and we added on some tea at the end, having asked our waitress for a recommendation. It was delicious with an aroma of peach.
The staff were pleasant and the waitress who assisted us was a complete delight: friendly, patient, and helpful with recommendations, all of which were spot on.
Looking at some of the other reviews, I think it’s worth noting that in Kyoto’s touristy areas, premium pricing seems to be the norm, so expecting budget rates at a French crêperie along the Philosopher’s Path might be unrealistic. Nevertheless, prices here align with other Breizh outlets, offering, for example, a complète at ¥1,380 (about €8.73). The use of high-quality organic ingredients, often imported from Breton, contributes to this, but also enhances the experience. The menu is prominently displayed in front of the shop, so there shouldn’t be...
Read moreBreizh Café is a true treasure for crepe lovers, and my recent visit was nothing short of extraordinary! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by the wonderful staff, whose warmth and attentiveness made the experience even more special.
Their savory crepes are in a league of their own—by far the best I’ve ever had! Each crepe was a masterpiece, perfectly thin and golden with fillings that were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully balanced. Every bite showcased the care and expertise that goes into their craft.
What made the experience unforgettable was the outstanding hospitality. The team went above and beyond, offering thoughtful recommendations and ensuring that every detail of my meal was perfect. Their passion for what they do is evident in every interaction, adding a personal touch to an already amazing dining experience.
Breizh Café isn’t just a place to eat; it’s a place to savor and celebrate the art of crepe-making. I can’t wait to return and explore more of their exceptional menu. If you’re looking for the perfect combination of delicious food and impeccable service, this is the place to be!...
Read moreI can't speak more highly about this place! I've been to France, live in Melbourne and have had many delicious crepes and galettes. I would say this place would be up there as one of my best crepe experiences ever!
The crepe Suzette was wonderfully presented (complete with the Grand Mariner being set alight!) and the texture was light, smooth and inviting. I got a vegetable galette which featured eggplant and snap peas which were in season. The buckwheat was crisp in the right places and cooked to perfection. And the pork pate is housemade and so tasty - it sort of has the consistency of a terrine.
Advice for travellers - book ahead as it does get busy being at the end of the Philosopher's walk. If you have a larger group, a separate room is available for 1000 yen and you get to sit on traditional Tanami seats.
You will be well accommodated no matter what language you speak however a little Japanese...
