Wow, what an absolute gem of a restaurant. The chef was friendly and welcoming. They have an English menu and the chef speaks a little broken English - Enough to order, have a conversation with and understand the ingredients and what you’re eating/drinking.

First off the food was fantastic - everything as I understood it was homemade. I’d highly recommend the chicken meatballs in soup which were delicious. The half day stew was also superb, soft juicy pork in a delicious sauce went really well with rice. They have a pickled ham with wasabi which had a great crunch to it and a surprising wasabi taste at the end. Lastly we finished with the sirloin steak which was cooked to perfection.

Overall a really nice little place, a hidden gem that I hope to return to...

Cozy Izakaya with some of the freshest tempura we've had in Japan. We also tried the sashimi special which was delicious and the grill steak, also really good.

There is limited seating but we were lucky enough to walk in and get seated right at the bar where we were able to watch the chef prepare the dishes. His English is very good and the staff also spoke very good English as well, so I would say this place is foreigner friendly. They were able to suggest a few Sakes to pair with our meal which we enjoyed.

Recommend getting a reservation if you want to secure your spot. We would go here again in a heartbeat!

It's affordable, we only spent so much per person because we couldn't...

Probably my favourite izakaya/restaurant in Japan. I first visited in February as a solo traveller and was made to feel very welcome and had a great night chatting and joking with the staff. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I went back a second time during that trip. I'm now back in Kyoto with friends and decided to visit again, this time booking a set course on Tabelog. I was not disappointed - the food was amazing and the staff were as friendly and welcoming as I remember. I highly recommend visiting En if you want a good izakaya experience but feel a little intimidated by some of the other establishments. You...

Small neighbourhood restaurant and bar. Loved the atmosphere and intimacy of the small venue. We met a California family who had chosen EN on their own and occupied the one small table at the front. We sat at the bar, which seats about 8. You get to talk with the chef as he does the final preparation of each order. The waitress was quite perky and helped us understand the details of the menu. Both she and the chef spoke English. We were seated immediately without needing reservations. Our tempura samplers with miso soup, rice, and additional tempura appetisers were served hot and were quite tasty.

Tiny restaurant, amazing people. Kind, happy, helpful, English is spoken as well. The food was delicious, the saki was amazing, the service was top notch and the owner was such a kind, nice person. We showed up early, he opens the window and appologises and smiles and says, we open at 530. I ask if we need a reservation, he smiles and says yes of course, for 3? What time? 530? I laugh and answer yes that would be amazing, he laughs and bows and says see you at 530. Wonderful experience, can not recommend enough. The duck soup was, the best soup we have had in Japan.
