Wow, what an absolute gem of a restaurant. The chef was friendly and welcoming. They have an English menu and the chef speaks a little broken English - Enough to order, have a conversation with and understand the ingredients and what you’re eating/drinking.
First off the food was fantastic - everything as I understood it was homemade. I’d highly recommend the chicken meatballs in soup which were delicious. The half day stew was also superb, soft juicy pork in a delicious sauce went really well with rice. They have a pickled ham with wasabi which had a great crunch to it and a surprising wasabi taste at the end. Lastly we finished with the sirloin steak which was cooked to perfection.
Overall a really nice little place, a hidden gem that I hope to return to...
Read moreCozy Izakaya with some of the freshest tempura we've had in Japan. We also tried the sashimi special which was delicious and the grill steak, also really good.
There is limited seating but we were lucky enough to walk in and get seated right at the bar where we were able to watch the chef prepare the dishes. His English is very good and the staff also spoke very good English as well, so I would say this place is foreigner friendly. They were able to suggest a few Sakes to pair with our meal which we enjoyed.
Recommend getting a reservation if you want to secure your spot. We would go here again in a heartbeat!
It's affordable, we only spent so much per person because we couldn't...

In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I went back a second time during that trip. I'm now back in Kyoto with friends and decided to visit again, this time booking a set course on Tabelog. I was not disappointed - the food was amazing and the staff were as friendly and welcoming as I remember. I highly recommend visiting En if you want a good izakaya experience but feel a little intimidated by some of the other establishments. You...
